Summary: The act of gifting dogtags to a loved one, in many cases, can hold a significant romantic context. Dogtags are considered in many militaristic spaces to be an accumulation of the soldiers identity in service; the act of gifting it to a romantic partner, then, becomes the tangible expression of love and devotion between the two, and symbolises the soldier’s commitment to their lover through offering a cornerstone of their identity. Beyond a romantic lens, gifting dogtags to another individual in many cases acts as a signifier for the emotional significance of that individual to the solider; it is up to the soldier and the gifted to decide what this act exactly means to them.
(Or, Hal gifting his dogtags to newly revived Barry; Barry doesn’t know what that means, at all, and tries to adjust to life while wearing them religiously. Everyone is sick of them.)
