The First Monday In May: Met Gala 2017

From Influencers, Actresses, Singers to Supermodels; the A-Listers ascended the famous stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night. Congregating for an occasion that is as extravagant as it is opulent, the annual Met Gala in New York City.

Perhaps the most highly anticipated event in the fashion calendar, an array of breath-taking gowns (and handsome custom suits for the male attendees) designed to fit with the theme of the exhibition “Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” gathered for the event hosted by Anna Wintour. Look no further than the archives of the Comme des Garçons runway collections to get an idea of the flamboyancy created by Japanese designer, Rei and with ‘avant-garde’ in mind, join me as I revisit some of my most memorable looks from the night…

1. Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger Collection

From the sweeping hair, bleached brows and bold winged eyeliner, the makeup alone brought enough drama before the striking nude dress itself. The asymmetric ensemble was a deconstructed jacket merged with a tulle ballgown, which included a train that delicately followed behind. The look combined classic couture and contemporary in an equally captivating and sultry manner.

2. Candice Swanepoel in Bespoke Topshop

The new mother swapped her white-feathered wings for a look that resembled a magnificent dark enchantress. The devastatingly gorgeous ballgown featured a voluminous skirt, emphasising her delicate waistline whilst the diamond jewellery ignited just the right amount of sparkle. The swept back hairstyle revealed her dark set eye makeup, complementing the all-black ensemble.

3. Lily-Rose Depp in Chanel

A vision to take your breath away, Lily looked the purest form of feminine elegance. The ballgown in a bold pink hue featured floral motifs and matching earrings as its only accessory. The delicate look required only natural enhancing make up to highlight her flawless facial structure and a softly swept up do to complete the charming look.

4. Taylor Hill in Carolina Herrera

Vamp-esque cranberry tones on the eyes and a wine coloured gown proved a stunning success for the model. The demure aesthetic of the gown gave a nod to the theme through its construction around the décolletage and off-the-shoulder design, whilst the poker straight hair and eye-catching earrings added another dimension to the elegant ensemble.

5. Bella Hadid in Alexander Wang

Using the event as an opportunity to debut her newly cropped tresses and substituting a ball gown for the alternative body sculpting approach, the dark and smouldering look oozed a feline aesthetic courtesy of the intricately beaded catsuit. Complete with a simple beauty look, the model ensured all of the attention remained on the barely-there creation.

6. Hailey Baldwin in Carolina Herrera

Playing to her background in ballet, the bustier and tiered tulle skirt made the model look like a modern day princess. The angelic ensemble was enhanced by soft romantic makeup, complementing the peachy hues in the skirt. The look was accessorised with a chain metal choker and an encrusted crystal veil designed by Gigi Burris, providing a contemporary edge.

7. Ruby Rose in Burberry

Opting to veer away from her usual androgynous style for her Met Gala debut, the feather-like creation looked simply divine on her svelte physique. The gown’s plunging neckline and sleeveless silhouette showcased her collection of tattoos as the main accessory. The understated makeup and voluminous cropped hairstyle married together for an overall striking aesthetic.

8. Adriana Lima in Alberta Ferretti

Reflecting timeless Hollywood glamour, the renowned Angel wore an all-black gown with a thigh-grazing split and plunging neckline. The soft beauty and sleek ballerina bun contributed to the model’s effortlessly stunning appeal. The look was accessorised with only earrings as a sparkling addition to match her diamond encrusted stilettos.

9. Behati Prinsloo Levine in Bespoke Topshop

The rock and roll Angel swapped her usual grunge style for an exquisite blush gown, supported by delicate straps around the neckline. Her blonde locks were crafted into Hollywood tousled waves, swept to one side to showcase her diamond chandelier earring. The figure hugging pale pink gown also included a flowing train, which completed her chic appeal.

10. Liu Wen in Off-White

Creative designer Virgil Abloh combined his 2016 and 2017 collection to produce the alternative dress, which boasted a sheer bodice with applique birds and contrasting denim skirt adding texture to the look. Her dewy makeup was finished with a pop of colour in the berry lipstick and scraped back ballerina bun, harmonising traditional glamour with the futuristic gown.
