This is my favorite fish in Central Texas. The Rio Grande Cichlid. I had a dream about a tiny little stream in the middle of the city that I found a year or so ago and and tried for several hours to catch one of these super dark, really big cichlids to no avail. The dream was vivid and I was using my fly gear. So I hit up that stream this weekend and after a few bass and sunfish I tried for about an hour to catch a Cichlid. Finally I swapped to a tiny (size 14) black ant and on the third cast this guy slammed it! The fight was awesome! These guys fight so hard and on that 2wt with 6x tippet I was so excited! He was ~11.5" long (measured my arm) and by far the biggest Cichlid I've ever caught. Told him thanks and threw him back to continue growing.
