His eyes opened.
It took him a second to understand where he was again, though the moaning of other soldiers and the white tent walls gave him a clear idea. His mind was still foggy, but he understood, and his memory came back to him. He’d been at war with his men, explaining the new plan of action and how they were to proceed through enemy lines. They were very close to the actual battle; he could hear the gunshots in the distance as he talked to his soldiers. Some hardened from war, some still barely above children.
Then the shelling happened, and everything went to hell. He’d been caught in one of the explosions, and had vague memories of pain and blood and seeing a soldier’s upper torso laying on front of him before passing out. He’d prayed, then. He thought that was it. He thought that was how he died.
But apparently not.
He sat up. Or tried to; his right arm failed him. He’d thought he’d reached back to pull himself up, but nothing-- he’d looked down to the right in confusion, only to be met with a smack of reality that led to him sinking back down into the hard mattress he’d been placed on.
There was no arm there. Just... His bicep, and a lot of bandages. His hand-- He felt like he could still move his fingers, his brain commanded it so, but there was nothing to move.
What the hell was he supposed to do like this? How was he supposed to fight? He was a general, sure, and he could surely just stay behind to make plans-- But what kind of a leader only did that? His soldiers wouldn’t follow him if he was such a coward. But he certainly couldn’t hold more than a pistol-- Goddamn. What would happen with Marley? They’d managed to shell the hell out of their army- for all Erwin knew, they could be on the cusp of losing the war now. He didn’t even have the chance to execute that plan.
He wasn’t thinking rationally, and perhaps it was at least partially from what small amounts of anesthetic they had. He pulled himself up with the one arm that still existed--thank God for that--and forced his way onto the floor. Two legs still, it seemed. It was just that damn arm he’d lost. His dominant arm.
Nearly as soon as his feet touched the ground and his weight went from the bed onto it, he crumbled, barely catching his elbow against the mattress. Gn-- Fuck. Couldn’t even stand. What the hell pain medication had they put him on? His head was throbbing. But he had to get up, he had to get up--
