Idea that’s Probably Trash
Chapter 1
Aryn sighed. Maybe dissections wouldn’t suck so badly if formaldehyde didn’t smell so terrible…?
It was three months before graduation, two weeks before Aryn’s eighteenth birthday, and today was the day of Aryn’s biology class’s infamous mouse dissection. Luckily, bio was her last class of the day and her mom was going to pick her up for their monthly “mother-daughter” night. Usually, Aryn’s mother Patricia would get a mani-pedi and then they’d go to a movie of Aryn’s choosing. Tonight, however, Aryn was finally going to get rid of her disagreeable mane of hair. Chop it all off and donate everything.
Aryn finished up the last question on the work sheet and dumped her dirtied tray in a sink. Stupid, lousy, lazy group members- making her do all the work! At least it was over with, and hey, she’d know what she was talking about if it came up on the final.
Some time later, Aryn stepped from the salon into the fading sunlight and twirled in delight. Patricia laughed at her antics. “Won’t your father be shocked?” she asked as gingerly dug through her purse for her keys, careful not to mess up her nails.
“Yeah, I know I still am, just a little bit. My head just feels so… light!” Aryn giggled, executing another small pirouette. “I’m just hoping we don’t run into anyone from school at the movies. I want this to be a total surprise to everyone tomorrow morning! Just imagine their faces!”
They were about halfway to the movie theater when it happened. The flash of light came first, followed by a jolt that made Aryn feel like she was floating for just a second. Pain blossomed on the side of her head. And then there was only darkness.

Aryn’s eyelids were heavy. Had- had she fallen asleep? Where was she? She had been… with her mom? In the car, on their way to the movies. She tried to think. Another car- it had hit them? Her mom! Aryn struggled to open her eyes. If they’d been hit, what had happened to her mom?
With herculean effort, Aryn managed to force her eyes open, only to hiss at the painfully bright light filling the room. She squinted through the pain, her eyes wildly searching what appeared to be a hospital room for her mother. No one. A cup of… something (Coffee? Tea?) steamed on a table near her bedside.
“Aryn!” a voice came from the doorway, tinged with relief and happiness. In rushed her brother, Matthew, and her best friend, Katie. The latter was trailing a colorful cloud of balloons behind her.
“God, we were so worried about you! Are you feeling alright? Are you warm enough? Are you thirsty? Is there anything we can get you? ” Katie babbled, letting the balloons drift to a halt near Aryn’s head. Typical Katie Barkstripe: world’s best worrier, slightly over- protective and firm believer that balloons could fix most problems.
“I’m fine, Katie. Where are Mom and Dad?”
“Dad wanted to be here, Air-bear, he really did, but-” Matt faltered.
“He’s working,” Aryn finished with a sigh.
“Um. Yeah. A-and I don’t know if I should be the one to tell you…” Here, Matt hesitated, somehow managing to look even more uncomfortable than he had before.
“Matt! She has to know! And-”
“Tell. Me. Now.” Aryn hissed.
“Aryn, sweetheart-” Katie began, moving to sit by Aryn’s side, only to be interrupted again, this time by Matt.
“Mom’s dead. You’ve been in a coma for two weeks.”
