iTrans* The Film
iTrans* Documentary
Director – Erica D. Hayes
Producer – Madisun Leigh
iTrans* is a prevailing documentary that will educate, enlighten and engross the general public’s perspective of transgender individuals. This documentary will take you through the deadly hate crimes, the persecution of transgender individuals based on religious beliefs and even the alienation of transgender children in the school systems throughout the world. We will highlight the fact that they have the same hopes, dreams, concerns and aspirations that we all have. We will illustrate the sheer bravery that it takes to be one’s “authentic self” in the face of opposition.
This piece will start out with a dramatic montage filled with cinematic music covering the murder of Tamyra Michaels, a transgender who was shot on December 14, 2002 in Highland Park, MI and left to die. After immediately grabbing the viewer’s attention with her hate-filled murder, we will begin to focus on the wonderful person that Tamyra was and the precarious lifestyle she led as a prostitute in order to make a living. Led by the narration of nationally acclaimed, CBS Radio personality, Madisun Leigh, the interviews from Ms. Michaels’ mother, close friends, attorneys and prosecutors will tell her story that ended in a devastating hate crime. We will gather footage of transgender prostitutes walking the streets at night in Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Johannesburg (South Africa), Sydney (Australia), Patna (India), Paris (France) and Thailand (Asia) to illustrate how this is a global gender generalization issue leading to limitations in job opportunities.
After painting Tamyra’s story, we will transition into a segment about a transgender child’s experience growing up in Australia. We will touch on the fact that the child didn’t have a choice on being transgender, but at an early age has been keenly aware that she is a girl trapped in a boy’s body since birth. The acceptance of open-minded parents raising a transgender child plays a vital role in their mental and social stability. We will pose the question of how gender stereotypes affect children around the world and allow the viewer to answer it. Through a creative montage displaying life as a transgender child in the school system, we plan to enlighten people on the difficulties and tremendous bullying that takes place. Many of these hate crimes stem from ignorance and result in suicide or homicide at a young age. Imagine how different the world would be if we can stop the violence before it starts.
We interview Clinical Psychologist & Psychotherapist Dr. Kofi Adoma, Ph.D. She provides an in-depth perspective on gender identity, gender variance and its social implications. The word “Transgender” is defined and valuable information is given on how we can best handle the subject matter within our own families and society in general.
iTrans* will incorporate what life is like for transgender individuals throughout the world while considering two controversial factors: race and religion. We will segue into a story of a Muslim transgender who has suffered massive persecution while practicing her religion in Europe. We will drive home the point that hate crimes are a global threat and should be treated as such. An interview from a Muslim, Christian and Hindu perspective with opposing views will be intercut with this scene to create a juxtaposition of refutation and anxiety.
We will visit the slums of Jakarta, Indonesia where President Obama's transgender former nanny, Evie lives and like most of the trans population there, is treated as an outcast. She has previously stated that she didn't know the boy she helped raise won the 2008 U.S. presidential election until she saw a picture of the family in local newspapers and on TV.
We talk to officials at PC Air, a charter airline in Thailand with routes across Asia that made the groundbreaking decision to hire a team of transgender flight attendants, believed to be the world’s first! We illustrate how "katoeys" or "lady boys," (as they are known in Thailand) have a greater visibility there than in many other nations.
We plan on paying attention to Uganda because there is total ignorance about transgender people there. Many people are informed by anti-gay sentiments fueled by evangelical Christian pastors from the United States, calling for the killing of gays and trans people and through laws including the Anti Homosexuality Bill 2009 that was introduced in Ugandan parliament last year. The bill expired with the expiry of the 8th Parliament after the February 2011 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, but homophobes and transphobes are pushing for it to be reintroduced for debate.
With this current negative stigma in mind, we will travel to Cape Town, easily the most liberal and gay-friendly city in South Africa, dubbed “South Africa’s Gay Capital”, to show the differences in their laws and protection towards their LGBT community in relation to other parts of the country and continent, where homosexuality is illegal in many areas, punishable by DEATH in others. We will even compare the lifestyle and job opportunities for transgender individuals there as well as the Gender Transition law, which allows transgenders to have their sex status altered on identification documents, including passports. We will segue into information about what the UN is doing to improve LGBT rights and show protests from all over the world.
We also go to Washington D.C. to speak with Transgender, Amanda Simpson who was appointed by President Obama to be a Senior Technical Advisor to the Commerce Dept.
This piece will not only educate its viewers on the complexities of being transgender, it will also serve as an aid to eliminate the ignorance that surrounds LGBT hate crimes. The first step to reducing hate crimes is to eliminate the ignorance that marinates beneath it. iTrans* will do just that. It is our hope that iTrans* will TRANSform the world.
