Looking up Simbakubwa kutokaafrika has also made me realise why hyaena remind me of mongeese or mustelids and not of dogs
(S kutokaafrika isnt very closely related at all but i was glancing at the phylogeny tree and anyway)
The hyaenas look a lot like a civet. And civets can look a bit like a banded mongoose.
If you stretch your brain, this stout kind of looks like the mongoose
And ngl but most mustelids look the same to me. Thus my brain goes hyaena -> weasel
Compare to a wolf, golden retriever and a border collie.
And anyway thats why i always get confused by people comparing hyaenas appearance to dogs. They dont look like dogs to me.
