u know what. ur absolutely right. ava /is/ smart. but u also know what? she knows/understands enough spanish to have a decent conversation and THATS canon and also forgotten so much in fics that it makes me want to cry

lots of people won’t broach other languages , at least in my experience, bc they know google translate is an untrustworthy friend. but there are really easy ways to write that someone is speaking in another language without having to actually Write it!! example:

Beatrice spoke the to the owner of the car in a language Ava didn’t understand. After a moment, she turned back to the group. ‘We can borrow it. Get in.’

The girl liked to practise her English with Ava but as the night wore on she grew tired of the novelty, returning to Spanish. Ava knew enough to keep up, mostly.

‘Why were you walking off the mountain?’ she asked.

Ava took a moment before responding in the same language. ‘We had to get away from the city. Some things happened there...’

‘Demons,’ the girl said, nodding. She couldn’t have been older than nine or ten but there was a solemnity to her like she already knew the worst of what the world had to offer. It was fucked up.

‘Nah, bad break up,’ Ava joked. Even though the words stung, it was worth it to see the girl’s surprise and then, even better, to hear her laugh.
