Warrior Nun Fan Fiction Book Club Week 2 Pick:

cooking with my (dead) mom by the brilliant @/jtl07!

This is one of my favorite fics. The premise, the framing, the writing, all of it comes together and the result is something complex and funny and special. I cycled between laughter, tears, and a giant grin the entire time I was reading. This got a little long, so the rest of my thoughts below the fold:

The setup is Ava is a YouTuber who discovers her dead mom had one of the first popular YouTube cooking shows, and she starts a series in which she'll learn to cook by watching her mom's old videos. Right from the start, we see jt working on another level in terms of presenting a very specific non-written format in a way that FEELS natural on the page. The title cards, the description of the cuts interwoven with dialogue, jt is literally creating a stylistic meta language in the framing of this. That's really hard!

Think of all the times you've seen writers present text messages, sometimes with time stamps, sometimes without, the different formatting, how some people just go for a skin that allows them to present the actual visual of a text message interface. Now think about how hard it is to take something much more dynamic and complex, actual video, and present it in a way that feels like a YouTube video, that feels like it simulates the visual language of those videos, and does it in a way that flows seamlessly with the action of the fic. Jt makes it look easy, but I assure you it is not.

And then Ava is teary-eyed right away, my heart!

I love the introduction of Beatrice as the silent partner, the offscreen friend who slowly but surely can't help but find herself onscreen more and more. I was also DYING at the implication that she watched the videos of Ava's mom in advance (because of course she did, of course she would want to do this, to help Ava, to feel closer to Ava). The subtlety of this, the way there's so much suggested with just one line, "you should play the video."

This fic is a masterclass in so many things. The juxtaposition of subtle lines like that with big silly humor moments. The interweaving of humor, and grief, and catharsis, and friendship, and love, and not once does a tonal shift feel unnatural or unearned. There are a few fics in the Warrior Nun for fandom that, to me, are really about grief in a very fundamental way, and this one to me captures something beautiful and hopeful about grief. The ways the people we loved, and who loved us in turn, stay a part of us, and make us who we are, and the ways we can know those people through ourselves, and others can know them too. Beatrice will never meet Ava's mom, but she knows the tune that Ava's mom used to sing by heart. She knows how to make Ava's favorite pão de deus just the way Ava's mom did. She knows the smile she sees on Ava every day. She knows the way Ava moves like her mom did. She knows the love and joy that Ava's mom showed to her.

I could go on and on and on, and might come back to do more with specific lines, but I'm curious what others think!

Prayer for Ava

Summary: Ava returned from the “other side”, and while years had passed for her, unexpected twists and turns had unfolded on Earth in just a few days. The Order lost its support, and Beatrice lost her faith.

A simple story about forgiveness, about finding your own place in a complicated world, and about how sometimes the greatest challenge isn’t saving the world. It’s allowing yourself to stay. Ava and Beatrice simply deserved their happy ending.
