it was december. mondstadt was having its celebration of the christmas month of its own - lights, decorations, even a few trees here and there. it most definitely felt festive and you loved it all. the taverns were open, the night skies filled with cheers and laughter from the drunk and the sober. these lively nights were such an uplifting thing to experience. seeing everyone so free and happy… it really warmed your heart.
though, as much as you liked the busy life in the town, you also enjoyed aa wander around. you didn’t stray too far, of course. in fact, you were awaiting to meet someone, so wandering off too much would be stupid. who were you waiting to meet? who else but your wonderful boyfriend, kaeya.
that wasn’t sarcasm.
as it happened, kaeya being the cavalry captain meant he had duties that he had to fulfil. even if they did happen to clash with initial plans. he had apologised to you, but you simply told him not to worry about it. duty calls and you respected that. besides, it gave you more time to fantasise about him.
you sat on the bridge connecting the town to the wild grounds. timmy wasn’t there for once, and neither was anyone else, meaning you were alone. you didn’t mind though.
the lovely cold air against your face felt more therapeutic than uncomfortable. granted you were wrapped warm in a large coat, a fluffy scarf and matching hat, as well as some lovely winter boots. so the majority of you was blanketed from the pinching air.
your hands, however, weren’t. you weren’t able to find your gloves, much to your luck. you had to result in stuffing your hands inside your pockets, but that didn’t help much at all. all it seemed to do was make them feel cramped, so now they lay on your lap, freezing.
it wasn’t too bad- the cold had made it so they were numb, so for the most part you couldn’t even feel the icy breeze.
that was sarcasm.
they were red raw though. admittedly you couldn’t really move your fingers, despite you playing with your hands. you couldn’t feel much either.
you gently lifted them to gently blow into your palms, in hope for some warmth. your eyes were set on the gate, awaiting your love to appear. he hadn’t said a time, but, oh, how you wished he would hold your hands to warm them up. he would do a far better job with his soft warm hands than your numb freezing ones.
alas, with some miracle, kaeya made his way into your view within a few moments. you stood up, your eyes sparkling as he neared you. he always looked so pretty- add the falling snow and the gentle breeze? mwah. absolute perfection.
“hello there, my darling. my… aren’t you cold?” he had stopped in front of you, looking at you with a gentle smirk.
a sheepish smile planted on your lips. “well… i’m a little bit cold. but that’s all a part of the adventure!” you gently leaned into his hands as he cupped your cheeks. so warm. “what’s a little cold going to do?”
he rolled his eyes. “you’re far too optimistic for your own good.” he sighed. with a lean in he pressed a soft kiss to your forehead, then another on your lips. “how about we take our stroll? you must have been waiting a while.”
with a soft nod the two of your started walking. “as i said, it’s really no problem, kaeya.” you reassured him, adding a gentle smile. “your work is important in more ways than one.”
“you’re also important in more ways than one.” he looked at you as you walked. “though, duty calls.” he sighed, shrugging.
“what did you have to do if you don’t mind me asking?”
“the usual things. it was what i was scheduled to do at the end of the month, but master jean implied i should do it now so i have time off.”
that made sense.
“i see… she’s very kind to do that.” you smiled. you had always liked jean. she seems to know kaeya enough to keep him well… you must remember to thank her one day.
kaeya nodded at your words. “a very kind person indeed.” he smiled back at you, giving you another soft kiss on the cheek.
the two of you fell into a silence after that. it was pleasant. the soft waves of the lake beside you and the quiet rustle of leaves was extremely relaxing. if only you were tucked in bed. you would have probably fallen asleep by now with kaeya next to you… masking you in his warm embrace as you nuzzled into his chest.
“what are you thinking about?”
you blinked a few times, coming out of the daze you had been lost in. “hm?”
“you were daydreaming~” he gently took your jaw into his hand, stopping you from walking any further. “and even i can see that gentle blush on your cheeks, darling~”
your heart fluttered. the man could say or do anything and you would get butterflies. “i was thinking about tonight is all… i’m looking forward to sleeping beside you again.” you smiled, softening as he moved his hand to cup your cheek.
“i see…” he hummed. “as am i~” he reached for your hand with his other, his eyes widening slightly at how cold there were. “archons- y/n, your hands are absolutely freezing!”
cue a worried kaeya.
you watched as he took both of your hands into his, holding them as he looked at you. “ah- well… you see,” another sheepish smile. “i forgot my gloves…”
he stared at you for a few moments, in seeming disbelief in your idiocy. it was freezing outside. it was snowing. how in teyvat could you have your forgotten gloves?
“more specifically i lost them-“ you then added at his silence. “i couldn’t find them anyway so i tried warming them up in my pockets or by blowing on them but they just seem to stay cold…”
“you should have told me.” kaeya sighed as he looked down at your hands. they were absolutely freezing. your fingers were red from the cold, and your hands were trembling slightly.
he reached into his coat pocket and retrieved what seemed to you as some small knitted item. you couldn’t quite make out what they were until he started putting them on your hands, revealing that they were mittens. with delicacy and care, kaeya put the mittens on your hands, gently kissing your palms after he was done.
he kept ahold of your hands as he looked back up at you, a smile on his face. “does this feel better?”
you replied with a grateful nod. you could almost cry- what a kind gesture that was… but, where did he get the mittens from? how long were they in his pockets?
“they’re starting to warm up already.” you smiled. “though i am wondering how long them poor mittens have been sitting in your coat pocket.”
he chuckled at that, gently wrapping his arms around your waist. “let’s just say i’m prepared for many occasions~” his face was now inches away from yours, his voice now a low mumble.
you gently blinked and nodded, your smile softening. “you’re too good to be true~”
with a smirk he leaned in and softly pecked your lips. “my darling, i believe it’s you that’s too good to be true~” he mumbled before kissing you again, melting into the kiss as you complied, your arms wrapping around him.
nothing could beat a winter kiss under the soft glow of a lantern in the snow.
