Day 4 on the Black Canyon Trail: Black Canyon City to Anthem (35km). Some distinct adversity today: rivers to ford, rocks the size of watermelons on the trail, flat tires (those two things may be related), popup shooting ranges on the edge of the desert (from a brochure in our hotel for an adventure tour company in the area: “Where else can you drive off-road vehicles and shoot REAL machine guns except ARIZONA?”)

But equal parts amazing: hillsides full of saguaro cactus, the Roadrunner Restaurant & Saloon for lunch, the bike shop in Anthem that helped get our tires sorted, and a drove of donkeys! #itsallaboutcontrast https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn524YlLpSZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Day 19 on the Portuguese Camino: Vigo to Redondela (15km). A short walking day with some adversity mixed in. We reach today’s destination at 2pm, one of our earliest arrivals, after a pleasant walk out of Vigo and along forest paths. We’d booked an apartment in Redondela, as all the guest houses and hotels were full (this town is where the coastal and central Portuguese routes meet and there are a lot of pilgrims coming thru here). Alas, there is a problem with our booking and we’re told our room has been given to someone else. We’re offered an apartment on the beach, a few kilometres away. Daphne asks: is it of a similar quality to yours? The host doesn’t commit either way. Really? You’re offering us a backup and you’re not going to tell us what it’s like? Not a great sign. The reality? A rustic cabin with an amazing ocean view. Day 2 on the Portuguese Camino: Vila Franca de Xira to Santarém (50km). We’re covering two walking stages of this pilgrimage with each day of biking. Part of me feels like we’re cheating. We didn’t have enough time to walk the full 620kms from Lisbon to Santiago. So we’re biking the first half, gliding past pilgrims walking the route, working much harder than us. Except when we have to hump the bikes up stairs to get over a set of railway tracks. Which has happened multiple times already.
