I've been in Lynn Haven, Florida since last Saturday to help my parents recover from Hurricane Michael. 2nd worst hit after Mexico Beach. Think London after the Blitz. Every building in town is damaged or destroyed. No power grid left. No running water still for many. No potable water. Most no longer have homes or clothes to wear, schools for their kids, or cars, food to eat or a way to cook it, no phone, internet, or cell service, no hospitals or emergency rooms left--doctors don't even have offices anymore. No home insurance. It's horrendous on a scale that is, for many people, still incomprehensible even one week later. My parents survived. Most of their home is luckily intact. They lost much more than just belongings. Everyone did. It's heart wrenching. * I would like to thank with much gratitude: The National Guard from around the country, the police officers who drove in from as far away as Texas, Oklahoma, Miami, Pennsylvania, & New York, the Salvation Army who was there feeding people the day after, the people at the 92.5 WPAP, Walmart, Lowe's, & Publix employees who came by the bus load from around the country to get these places open in their parking lots so people could eat, cover roofs, get gas cans, generators, batteries, food, gas, and clothes. Thank you to those who selflessly stood in the heat each day (& still are) to load free cases of water into cars, pass out bags of fruit in gas lines, fill gas cans/tanks for desperate people, &hand out ice. Thank you AT&T--my cell company---for immediate service so I could use my phone to find resources for my parents and their neighbors and help strangers make calls to family, T-Mobile for handing out truckloads of free LG smartphones with free service and water because Verizon, the main service provider, let everyone down catastrophically, & the countless volunteers from everywhere there to cut up trees and clean up debris for free, the ASPCA who took in lost animals & put up temporary animal shelters, & the people of Lynn Haven who set aside their own crisis to help neighbors. * Red Cross where the hell were you?!
