The only type of birth control that is promoted within Catholicism is the Natural Family Planning (NFP) method. Even though this is not a ‘Catholic thing’ per se, many religious groups have adopted this method. The Catholic Church has deemed NFP as a morally acceptable form of birth control because there is not an artificial substance preventing or aborting a pregnancy. Instead, the NFP method tracks a women’s fertile circle to know the days where pregnancy is more likely to occur. The couple is then able to avoid or focus on the fertile days of a woman’s cycle to avoid or to get pregnant.
The process of the Natural Family Planning method looks at waking temperature, cervical mucus secretions and physical change that occurs in the cervix. These changes can be recorded onto a calendar that will be easy to read for the up coming months of fertility.
This type of birth control has been very effective for couples. There are many benefits to the Natural Family Planning method, these include the method’s effectiveness, high morality, safeness, and that it is natural and inexpensive. These benefits have been proven both by the Catholic Church and medical professionals. The NFP method allows for married couples to be intimate with each other without the worry of an unplanned pregnancy. As well, the NFP method allows for the couple to know the best times to get pregnant. Overall, the NFP method allows married couples to have more control over when they decide to get pregnant or not, allowing for a better marriage according to the Catholic Church.
