Running a technical session on french knitting with wire at the CASS School of Design, with BA degree Jewellery & Silversmithing students in Central House. We started off with making a basic version of a french knitting spool; using a wooden block with a 16mm drilled hole and the pegs were made from dental stainless steel. A blunt sewing needle ( one normally used for using wool) & 26 gauge wire was used to knit. It’s one of those techniques that you have to preserve with at the beginning, because it’s starts off looking very messy, and it’s feels like battle of wills with the wire. But slowly and surely there are rewarding results to be had.
