Being an artist is about more than just posting pretty pictures of your artwork online. It’s also a form of expression; it’s a way for us to be able to put our thoughts and emotions out there in a way that others may relate to it. A picture really is worth a thousand words. . . . I’ve gotten better over the years, but I’ve always had such a hard time putting my thoughts or feelings out there in a way that would make sense to others. Perhaps you’ve noticed this if you watch any of my YouTube videos. I’ve found it difficult to express whatever’s been on my mind ever since I was young. On the other hand, give me a pen or paintbrush and I find it a lot easier to tell my story. Whether writing or painting, I discovered this many years ago when dealing with massive amounts of anxiety. It all seemed to dissipate once I started painting-the world got a little quieter and more peaceful and I felt like others were just beginning to understand who I am, my story. . . . This piece is titled “Grow” and was inspired by the lemon tree in my studio that has continued to grow and flower despite being exposed to a long, cold winter. Here in Minnesota the weather has been so bipolar and we would experience all four seasons in a matter of a few days. Being an artist that is just kickstarting her career, there have been many ups and downs and some days the motivation just isn’t there. In these moments, I aspire to be like my Minnesota lemon tree. It just keeps growing and hanging on despite the cold and the many changes in weather; it serves as a reminder that winter only a season. It ends eventually and spring always arrives again sooner or later. . . . If you’ve been stuck as well, I hope this inspires you to keep reaching for the stars. You’ll get there eventually.
