This is really great. Like really great. One of my...
Before I came back to dance as adult, I danced from 4-14. I started judging my body at 6 years old. By six I thought that it was common knowledge that I was too fat. By 14 I convinced myself that I was too fat to keep dancing. I could no longer stand to look at myself in the mirror. You know how they say you should be the person you needed when you were younger? I’m trying with all my heart to be that person now. For all the kids out there that think they don’t deserve a place in their studio because of their size. For all the children who “know” they’re too fat- and for all the people who daily confirm their toxic thoughts. For the child in all of us that needs to be loved, who needs to know that they are always enough and deserve to the things that bring them joy.
You tell that baby to dance for joy. You tell that baby that she is beautiful, her dance is beautiful, to embrace her body and the joy in moving it. Tell that baby there will always be a place for her in your class. Be the teacher that drowns out the voices that tell her she doesn’t deserve to be there. I think you already must be, you may well be the teacher that saves her little life.
