what do you think about the centennial lightbulb (aka the thing that got fucking smashed by a giant football in 17776)
Funny you ask me this right now, as I’m actually talking to a friend rn about it
Really, I think that in regards to 17776, it really does have a deeper meaning the more you think about it.
17776 itself takes place in a world where nobody can die, and losing things just isn’t something you would deal with anymore. Its death is probably way more significant in that world due to that fact. Even if it is just a tiny lightbulb, it still is something they lost for the first time in ages.
Another thing I wanna bring up while I have the chance is that I think that there’s another way it could be seen? Ten states that while technology did advance during all this time, humanity didn’t want that. They wanted to hold onto the past they still had, and to protect what they had left, afraid that the future would take it from them.
Just- I don’t know, the fact that the 500 ball, which is a product of this future they live in, where football games have spanned over thousands and thousands of years, was the thing that destroyed the bulb- I feel like there’s a deeper meaning there. The bulb could be representing the past that humanity wanted to keep, and the 500 ball could represent the future that they fear will destroy it.
I could be completely wrong here, but I hope this makes sense.
