MP3 has slightly worse quality at 128k (using LAME) and for all intents and purposes both are equal when you are using Alt-presets versus high bitrate AAC - it's a matter of convenience - for good AACs you can use itunes but you need to use LAME for good MP3s. If you want it to work in iTunes, ogg is out of the picture. You may not be able to tell the difference now, but transcoding it to some other format will result in more sound quality loss than if you are transcoding from a higher quality encode. When you choose AAC Encoder your preset choices are High Quality (128 kbps), iTunes Plus (256 kbps), or Spoken Podcast (64 kbps). When you select either AAC Encoder or MP3 Encoder in the Import Using pop-up menu you can choose a different bit rate in the Setting pop-up menu below. (Using these encoders a 4-minute track is approximately 40MB.) The AIFF and WAV encoders maintain audio files at their original size and resolution. The Apple Lossless encoder cuts file size approximately in half without losing audio quality. In the resulting Import Settings window you can choose AAC Encoder, AIFF Encoder, Apple Lossless Encoder, MP3 Encoder, or WAV Encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu. To change the import settings, click on the appropriately named Import Settings button.
