“How are you feeling darling?” Itzan asks softly as he walks into the nursery behind you.
“I didn’t even hear you come home,” You comment, humming in contentment as his arms wrap around you from behind, “But I’m okay. How was work?”
He stifles a yawn, “I hate night shoots.”
“Go and get some rest,” You encourage, letting your hands fall on top of his over your swollen belly.
“No, that’s okay. I promised I’d help you with the last few bits in here,” He assures you, kissing down your jawline lazily as he speaks.
“Don’t be silly, you’ll probably fall asleep trying to put up a shelf,” You roll your eyes, “I can do it honestly.”
“(Y/n), you’re two weeks away from your due date. You shouldn’t be doing anything,” He laughs, “How about we go watch a movie or something to chill for a bit and then we can finish the nursery afterwards.”
“Alright, fine, but you’ll fall asleep in the movie.”
Itzan chuckles and turns you around to face him, “Have you thought of any names today?”
“Still nothing,” You sigh as you hold your bump to waddle through to the lounge in your apartment, “It’s harder than I thought it would be.”
“Well, at least we know we’re thinking of girls names,” He points out as he helps you to sit down on the couch and turns on Netflix to watch the film you’d started watching before he went to work last night.
“I just can’t think of any names that will suit her,” You sigh as you try to find any spot on the sofa that will be remotely comfortable.
“What about... Jasmine?” Itzan suggests as he snuggles down beside you and rests his head on your shoulder, “Or Ariel?”
“Are you just naming the Disney princesses?” You laugh, “Inventive, very inventive.”
“Okay... Marina? Carla? Lu? Nadia?”
You roll your eyes and chuckle, “Again, imaginative but no.”
“There was one name that I saw when I was looking the other day,” He ponders, “It was Melody.”
At that, you start to feel the indescribable feeling of kicking coming from your belly as she clearly wakes up inside of you.
Itzan looks down and places his hand there instantly, “Melody, huh?”
“I think she likes it,” You smile, holding your hand beside his on your bump as he presses a kiss to your shoulder where his head had been laying.
“Melody Escamilla.”

“You did it,” Itzan beams proudly, sounding breathless as he speaks.
The look in his eyes is an image you’ll capture forever and those words feel like they could echo in your ears for a thousand years. There’s a heading of sweat forming on his forehead and his eyes crinkle with a bright smile as he looks down at where you were propped up in the hospital bed. Somehow, amongst the chaos, he still looks angelic in the off putting hospital lighting. You on the other hand? You were sweating, red, your hair in disarray, your entire body weak - but he was right, you’d done it. And on this day, you’d brought a life into the world.
“I’m so proud of you babe,” Itzan mumbles as he leans forward and presses a soft, lingering kiss to your forehead before letting his lips dip down to kiss yours.
You rest your head against him as he shifts around to perch himself on the bed beside you, an arm wrapping around your shoulders.
“Itzan and (Y/n), say hello to your baby girl,” The midwife turns around with a bright smile and carries the smallest bundle of powder pink in their arms, “Congratulations to you both.”
And for the first time, you feel the weight of your own baby in your arms. She looks so tiny and vulnerable as every feature of her morphs more and more into a human and no longer the foetus inside of you. Her cries have softened now and she’s simply peaceful, setting the tone for the rest of the calmed hospital room.
“Hello darling,” Itzan smiles as he holds one arm around her too, “You made quite the entrance, huh?”
You laugh tiredly and feel more and more of that indescribable attachment form between you and her.
“Do you have a name yet?” The midwife asks, her voice somehow remaining so soothing even after your traumatic and stressful childbirth.
Itzan looks at you and you nod as if confirming his silent question, “Yeah, we do. This is Melody.”
Melody. The principal part in harmonised music. Because that’s exactly what this little girl had done in her short time so far. She’d brought you and Itzan closer than you’d ever thought possible, given you a thousand more reasons to fall in love with your lives, and harmonised the small definition of family that you’d made together. Melody Escamilla.

You’re relieved to have some peace when you’re taken back to the private room to rest and spend some time with Itzan and Melody. All of the doctors had told you to rest and get some sleep whilst you could. Though it felt near impossible to do so at the minute. You had a thousand thoughts running through your head of what you’d need to do from here, everything you needed to do to be a good mother, had you bought enough nappies?! Nevertheless, you close your eyes and try with every part of you to let sleep wash over your racing mind.
You’re just about to drift off when you first hear Itzan speaking softly beside you. He was sat in the hospital chair adjacent to the bed and had been holding Melody in his arms. She’d been awake for a little while but fell asleep against her father’s chest like she was meant to be there. He still couldn’t bare the thought of setting her down into the Moses basket and instead had chosen to keep her close to his heart - the heart that she already owned.
“You should be proud of your Mummy after today,” He laughs gently to himself, “After the last nine months. You definitely didn’t make things easy for her, did you?”
He’s speaking quietly enough like he desperately doesn’t want to wake you up. But how could you possibly sleep now?!
“You know, (Y/n)‘s always had it in her to be a Mum. She’s an incredible woman - she’s kind, and devoted, and I’ve never met someone so selfless. And please don’t tell her this, but she’s always right,” He chuckles gently as his voice cracks at the words.
You can already feel your bottom lip try to tremble as you turn to glance in his direction. He’s so solely focused on the little girl in his arms that he couldn’t possibly notice your open eyes.
“And now the days here, I’ll learn how to be a good dad. I’ll teach you how to do the stuff that Mummy doesn’t want you to know, and I’ll be harsh when she needs me to be. I’ll learn how to be a good dad. But my wife? The woman you’re so lucky to call Mum? She’s already there. She’s always just been a mother without a child,” His voice breaks as a tear slips down his cheek, “And I’ll forever count my blessings that you came into the world to change that.”
He leans down and presses a kiss to her forehead, cautious as he couldn’t imagine waking her from such a gentle sleep. Only then does he look up to see you looking back at him.
“Hey, darling,” He speaks quietly, “Did you sleep okay?”
He’s oblivious to you having heard any of his silent confessions and you couldn’t break it to him that you’d heard the whole thing.
You force a nod and smile lightly, “Has she been okay?”
He laughs a little, “Probably already tired of hearing her Dad talk too much.”
You smile tiredly as he moves over and sits beside you on the bed.
“She’s perfect (Y/n). She’s so perfect.”
You look at how proudly he looks at Melody, with such admiration in his eyes after a fearfully short time. She’s everything he’d been waiting for since you’d first told him that you were pregnant.
“Itzan, you’ll be such a good father to her. You know that, don’t you?”
He smiles so lightly and leans down to press a kiss to your head, “I’ll do my best.”
“You already are.”
