IUL is an acronym for Individual Unclaimed Property. It is the name given to insurance claims that were not reported in a person's personal records. Indexed universal life policies are a form of universal life insurance, a type of coverage that provides a death benefit and a cash account that can be used to take loans and make payments for policy premiums.
IUL is not usually an active life insurance policy. In general it is more expensive than other types of insurance because of the tax benefits and the investment opportunity provided by the policy. When an individual dies, his beneficiary has to make the claim to receive the death benefits. IUL does not require a claim, but it can help to avoid losing the benefit of the policy to the government. The reason for this is that death benefits are credited to the cash account and they are subject to inflation, dividends and investment gains.
The cash value of an IUL policy is the actual cash value of the policy. If the policy holder dies prior to his/her scheduled death date, then the money in the policy's cash value will never be paid out. This is because the death benefit will have already been paid out at the time of death. In some cases, death benefits can only be paid out when the policyholder has a lump sum cash value.
If a policyholder's beneficiaries to receive the death benefits, their distribution will depend on the state of residence. If the IUL policyholder dies while living in California, then his/her heirs will receive the death benefits in California. However, if the IUL policyholder lives in Nevada, then the death benefits will go to his/her beneficiaries in any state where he/she resided.
IUL policies are available in many forms including universal life, term life and term universal. Each of these different types of IUL policies will offer different benefits.
IUL policies do not require the policyholder to take out a separate policy. Instead, the same premium can cover the whole life or term life coverage on the IUL policy. With a term life policy, the premium may be paid over a specified period of time or in one lump sum.
The most common form of IUL coverage is universal life. This type of coverage is similar to a normal term policy. This type of policy gives the insured the same benefits as a traditional permanent life policy, plus an additional option for receiving cash-value annuities.
When an IUL policyholder dies, his/her estate has to make a claim to obtain the death benefits. If the beneficiary lives in California, it will be necessary to fill out a Claim for Death Benefit Claim form before the IUL policy is surrendered. If the claimant lives in Nevada, it will have to file a Claim for Death Benefit Claim form before surrendering the policy. The process of surrendering an IUL policy is known as surrendering a universal life policy.
The cash value of the cash-value annuities will be paid from the amount of the death benefit and may be paid out over a period of time. In some states, the cash value of the annuities can be withdrawn by the beneficiary immediately.
It is important that the death benefit is paid out as quickly as possible. Any delay in the payment of death benefits may cause a significant tax liability to the beneficiary.
If an IUL policy is surrendered, the death benefit will be paid out by the insurance company and the beneficiary must then distribute the money to his/her beneficiaries. or they must pay the death benefit to the insurance company.
Although death benefits can be received for a specified amount of time, the death benefit may also be paid out over a longer period of time. The cash value of the annuity may also increase over time.
