Revisions? Yeah... Revisions
Throughout my time planning the online lesson I knew that it was going to be fun. However, the google sties I was using was apparently the old version! I had no real beauty to the site, having to manually upload every element of text, video, or color. It was taking so long. I knew something was not right but could not figure it out. Later a brand new bubble appears asking if I want to change to new sites! YES I DO! So I converted my site over and began the revisions that the new sites allowed and that my peer reviewer noted. I had a lot of words and too little images. I altered that and created more pictures and videos to go with my lesson. I condensed the pages with the updates and created a more streamlined process. I also altered the teachers page so that the document would appear directly on the page, making it clearer for teachers. Overall, the switch to the new sites and the extra revision time made this lesson pretty good, if I do say so myself!

And So, I Reflect
Reflection on W310
1. The Importance of Telling a Story
- The one thing I have always loved to do is tell stories. I tell them in any way possible, singing, dramatic telling, theatre, etc. No matter what I subject I was studying in school, if I had a story to connect it to I still remember it to this day. Dirksen, in chapter 4, talks about engaging audiences. In this chapter Dirksen defines why stories engage audiences (133-134). Stories, according to the book, connect mental shelves, create a logical flow, create suspense, and are not boring (134). To me, it goes beyond that. Stories give heart to facts. They relate what could be a string of meaningless information to the emotional complex of a person. Becoming a Spanish teacher, the importance of using stories in teaching is clear to me. One of the best ways to learn language is to read it, expanding vocabulary and engaging in the syntax of the language. I know that stories will help my future in the classroom. I also learned this lesson through my professor. She came in telling stories of years past (even dating horror stories). We felt connected to her and laughed as we learned. Who knew telling stories could be so fantastic!
2. Connecting Google Sites to Lesson Plans
- One of the greatest revelations I have had this semester is the actual use of Google Sites. This moment of shining lights and glory came to me recently, the day after our assignment was ‘due’ (and when I had a frustration fit in my room late at night as Google sites was still not working for me). I teach Spanish to the sweetest homeschooled 7thgreater in the world. She cares so deeply and makes me laugh; however, she has been struggling with working on her own and grasping the concepts. I discussed this issue with her mother/principal and came to a halting stop when I realized I could send Helen lesson plans online through google sites so it is interactive, educational, and engaging. I was blown away. I JUST APPLIED SOME RANDOM GOOGLE THING WE LEARNED TO MY REAL-LIFE RIGHT NOW. This made me laugh so hard because I had no clue how I would use that besides with snow days. This take away is applied in my life right now and really helped me to see how applicable these assignments can be!
3. How reflection can help you learn more than you thought you learned
- In high school I hated when my teachers would ask me to reflect on what I learned. I had to fill out some random questionnaire or create some deep psychological meaning out of absolutely nothing. I feared the same thing when I saw these very blogs. I wanted to run away and hide because I did not want to have to take time to create something to reflect on. However, then the BLOG idea hit me. I LOVE TO WRITE. I LOVE TO TELL STORIES and even more than that I LOVE TO BE CREATIVE. A BLOG suddenly became something I enjoyed doing. I like to write and think that at least one person was reading my quirky writing. Little did I know, this quirky writing allowed me to actually reflect on what I was learning. I find myself using the concepts that I reflected about in every class project I do. The reflection and writing allowed me to apply things I learned. I honestly have to say that I have some ideas about reflection for my own classroom. I also have a better view on reflection and how important it really is.
4. That it is okay to struggle and have off days
- This take-away is more from the professor who taught the class than the assignments or the book, but it is something that I indeed took-away and think is valuable enough to place in this list. Simply put, we walked into this class and were told that if we needed a day to cry we could do that. Our professor engaged us in a way that said “Hi, I am a human too and I would like us to have a relationship of growth and understanding”. I needed no other comment to know that I could be honest with this teacher. If we were stressed, the class could tell her, and she would understand. This is something that more teachers need to know. Teachers need to realize that they can be humans as well. They do not need to have it ALL together ALL the time. They can show emotion, laugh, make jokes, and talk to their students like humans. We care about our teachers and being personable shows us that they care about us too. This class was one of the few classes I can say our professor was in fact an authority figure while still being a sweet person to us. This is something I will be reminded of and take into every classroom I am a part of.
5. How much design plays into engagement in the classroom
- I believe the overarching take-away that I learned this semester was how important design is. The classroom is built on design. Whether it is your lesson plan design or the PowerPoint slides that your notes are on, design engages and ties the finishing bow on your classroom. Every project showed me different ways that I could improve my presentation, communication, and design skills. I think I will always look at teacher’s PowerPoints and wonder how they could have been improved or what interactive things could they have added. As I mentioned, I learned the importance of google sites, telling stories, and reflecting on learning. All of these important teaching techniques rely heavily on design. They need to engage the audience; therefore, you have to think of balance and legibility (different keys of design). To sum it up, design=important. I won’t forget it. I have already begun checking my work to make sure it is engaging and appealing, following keys I read about in Dirksen.
