IVs: Voluntary Banes
I do not remember how long ago it was when I first discovered that Pokémon has some crazy math involved. It either occurred to me when I tried calculating damage on my own or after I delved into Bulbapedia. Either way, crazy maths. Like in many cases, I'm split on which system I like more. Gens I and II had "Individual Values" (your rolled stats; IVs) ranging from 0 to 15, so it was easier to obtain a Pokémon with perfect stats. However, the system of increasing the stats with experience - appropriately dubbed Stat Experience - is incredibly complicated and only really helped through the box trick (a glitch), vitamins (which are capped in effectiveness), and Pokérus (Gen II only), which allow you to more easily max out your Stat Exp. (a value of 65535 in each stat). Gens III onward gave IVs a range of 0-31, making it incredibly difficult to get a Pokémon with even one perfect stat. Complicating this is Nature, which lowers one stat and raises another by 10% each; Gen IV had to introduce characteristics to let a player know which stat had the best IV, such is the complexity. However, instead of Stat Exp., the newer system uses Effort Values (EVs), which are incredibly easy to keep track of. The values in EVs are simpler - basically, you can have two bytes maxed out total (510 EVs per Pokémon being raised) and you can have one full byte (255) in a given stat. Each enemy Pokémon grants between 1-3 EVs depending on species and these EVs are assigned to given stats by the enemy's species. Thus, EV training means thinking ahead, but it is much, much easier to keep track of. Neither of these are really my ticket. If I were designing Pokémon, I would give equal weight to species, experience, and luck/birth/rolls. As with most RPGs, I would allow the player to assign points for stat growth; I might also do so with the base stats, but whatevs. To explain the difference between the original Gens and the post-reboot ones, I'll provide you with what I've done recently: restarted from a save file until I got the perfect set of IVs. I did this in Yellow with a Pikachu; sure enough, within half an hour, I had all 15s. (There are only four real IVs, though, as Special is one stat and the IV for HP is determined by the other IVs; if you have perfect IVs in the first four [tetraflawless], the formula automatically gives you a perfect HP IV [pentaflawless]). In Y, I have been doing the same thing for several months now. I started with a Froakie, switched to Fennekin, and continued with Froakie. It's not that I haven't gotten a single 31 ever (or even 30s); it is that it won't be good enough. Today, for example, I got a 13 in Speed; on a Froakie, Speed is the most crucial of the stats, as it is ridiculously high; at level 5 when unmodified by a Nature, the max it can be is 13, so this was a good sign. However, all of the other stats were subpar (except for HP, which is nonetheless a low stat for Froakie) and the Nature affected Defense and Special Defense (Froakie's two other bad stats). Froakie is a fragile speedster type: its only good stat is Speed, but it is useable as an attacker (from either attacking stat). A 13 in Speed is not the max stat, either: at level 5, a Froakie with a Nature that improves Speed can have a 14 with an IV as low as 18. With such a Nature, an IV of 31 will also get you a 14, so it then becomes necessary to gain a level (which you do after your first battle with Shauna) to figure out what Speed IV you have. It is that complicated. "What about breeding?" Breeding is both helpful and difficult. The point of breeding is to eliminate the random number generator - to pick the IVs, Nature, and ability you want. This doesn't necessarily mean perfect IVs, as you may want a given Hidden Power type (which has been determined by IVs since Gen II; that's another can of algebraic worms, though). Breeding has become easier and easier with each generation, but it is still somewhat difficult. As such, the best way to breed in Gen VI (Y) is to use the Friend Safari (Pokémon from it are guaranteed to have one perfect IV) and mine Dittos. You can only do this after beating the Elite Four, however, which makes this pointless except for competitive battling. Unless a friend does this, which is the offer I've been given. "But competitive battling is easy - you just have to connect to WiFi!" True, but there is one other catch: because of Greninja's signature-yet-hidden ability, its wide move pool, and its high speed, Greninja is in the Uber tier. This means that I probably wouldn't get to battle with it on most occasions. The ability, Protean, changes a Pokémon's typing to the move it is about to use. This, perhaps, surpasses Conversion 2 and Camouflage as an amazing move. However, for my normal team, I didn't want this: I wanted to employ Greninja's Water/Dark typing defensively, as it had covered most of the bases I had missed with the rest of the team. However, since I have learned that Greninja is Uber anyway, this means I'll have to restructure my team accordionly. (This is actually a really good thing: I was torn between Mega Mewtwo Y and Mega Medicham [you're only able to have one mega per team], so now I just need to make an Ubers team and a non-Ubers one.) For the record, the Pokémon I've been considering besides those mentioned are Florges, Vivillon, Raichu, Furfrou, Doublade/Aegislash, Goodra, Klefki, Noivern, Frillish, Chandelure, and a few others. I really like Gen VI.
Anyone out there with a normal friend safari in Pokemon X or Y? I finally wanted to start EV and IV training but I have no friends with normal typing. So please message me!
Pokémon X and Y- Friend Safaris
Yo, just started playing Pokémon X again after a long break from it and I need more Friend Safaris, so.. friend codes anyone?? I’m looking for normal type safaris as I am looking for a Ditto with good IVs.
PM me if you are interested in exchanging friend codes c:
Live Poke Day
Had two people attempt to start an IV on me today. Didn't pass out! So that's a win for me. I also managed to get the vein on my own IV start. It wasn't pretty, but I got it. That, my friends, is why we wear gloves when we start IVs. Overall, a good day.
I have a Deino with near all balanced stats. I normally don't do IV training, but I took a shot at it. I like how some of them are turning out!
I think IV's are the worst thing in all of Pokemon. Removing them wouldn't change anything on a competitive level because all stats would just be 31 lower. Ev's, natures, and abilities are cool w/ me though.
Went through about 100 eggs trying to breed that fucking Gible and then two pop out at once what the fuck m8
hmu if you want a Naughty 31/31/31/x/31/31 Gible (Female/Sand Veil)
