Ivan Aivazovsky's "The Battle of Sinop on 18th November 1853 (Night after Battle)" captures the silence after the fighting has ended. Burning ships light the sea with glowing oranges and reds while smoke drifts across the dark night sky creating one of the artist's most dramatic seascapes. Born on July 29, 1817, Aivazovsky became one of history's greatest marine painters.
