Are you interested in greek life but are unsure? Keep reading then! I will be debunking myths and answering common questions. Joining greek life was the best decision I’ve made and I hope it can be a decision you decide to take as well. 

Myths:

Hazing: You are not going to get hazed. There are so many rules and laws that are in place to prevent hazing. 

It will lower your GPA: This is so so so untrue. In fact, most greek organizations have a minimum GPA expected from their members. It is also expected for members to complete a certain amount of study hours per week. Most of my sisters have maintained a 4.0 GPA since we are being held accountable for our grades. 

It will take up most of your time: Yes, greek life is time consuming, however, you will still have enough time for school, personal life, and more. While I do attend chapter once a week and maybe another event or two, I always have enough time to complete homework and do other things, it’s just a matter of working with your schedule. Greek life has taught me time management, a valuable skill we all need. 

You are paying for your friends: Yes, dues are expected. However, these fees go towards housing, chapter operations, initiation fees, social functions, and more. Things all necessary to keep the organization ruining. But if you still wanna call that “paying for friends,” go right ahead because I have gained the best friends I could have asked for ;) 

Common Questions:

How do you join? In order to join a sorority you have to go through formal recruitment which happens in the fall. You visit all the houses and make selections. If you and the sorority house mutually select each other, you continue with the events for the rest week. You continue to cut houses until you find the one for you. Daily events focus on sisterhood, the sorority’s philanthropy, and more. You can also join through spring recruitment (if the sorority offers it). Spring recruitment is just a very informal version of fall/formal recruitment.  

Can I only do rush/recruitment if I am a freshman? No! Any age/grade level student at a 4 year university is welcome. While majority of the girls in my pledge class were freshman, there was girls who were older as well.

How can a sorority/greek life benefit me? Well to start off, being in greek life isn’t just about wearing your letters. It’s about having a group of sisters that will be there to support you when you experience any hardships. It’s about supporting an amazing philanthropy, which looks amazing on resumes! Joining greek life is also a great way of making friends. I used to be so shy but now I am more willing to step out of my comfort zone, and that is something I used to never be able to do.
