Is the Alabama expedition actually underrated, or is it just that nobody talks about it? I mean, it got a decent movie—but maybe the real expedition guys weren’t ‘hot’ enough to get the hype
I’ve not actually seen the movie yet (if you’re referring to Against The Ice?) so I can’t necessarily speak to that, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it underrated- I think the main reason that it isn’t a hugely popular or well known expedition is that there simply isn’t a huge amount of easily accessible information about it.
The ‘popular’ expeditions, for lack of a better word, are ones like the Franklin Expedition or Terra Nova or Endurance where there is an easily accessible wealth of information and research. The Alabama Expedition doesn’t even have a wikipedia page, with the expedition itself only being a few paragraphs on the expedition leader’s page. I think it’s just not hugely mainstream because it was a fairly small expedition to start with, and it’s not one that there’s many books about or that was huge in the way that the poles or the northwest passage expeditions were.
tl;dr, I don’t think the Alabama Expedition is underrated or that they weren’t ’hot enough’, just that there’s really not much easy information about it.
