Gili Air, you shall be dearly missed~ #IVHQweekends #divehaven #backtovolunteeringafteragoodbreak
This weekend I took a 2.5 hour bus ($10) to the Mekong Delta with two of my volunteering friends from Canada and Norway. It was incredible! We stayed in an awesome home stay/hostel for $10 all night that included dinner, breakfast, and free bikes. Vietnamese coffee is also VERY good and I usually dislike coffee. Saturday we just biked around and read our books in such a quiet place (VERY different from Ho Chi Minh haha). Sunday we took a boat tour from 6am-noon. This included going to a floating market and going on very thin boats pushed by these very strong older women. We had such a good time and I hope to return with my dad when he visits. I highly suggest visiting this place if you ever get the chance.

Weekend 1: Jurassic Park
Friday morning, my roommates and I woke up at the butt crack of dawn to catch the 6 am bus to Manuel Antonio. I had the most delicious empanada con pollo for breakfast, and we were off! I managed to listen to the first ten minutes of Outlander before passing out in the shape of a pretzel. (Leg room is hard to come by when The Big Purp doesn’t fit in the overhead compartment.) The five minutes I managed to keep my eyes open, the view was incredible! A winding road through mountains of lush, tropical foliage is hard to beat. The bus stopped right outside our hostel, Backpackers Manuel Antonio, and after dropping off our bags, we headed straight for the beach. We found a perfect spot-- far away from people, and right next to the dinosaurs. Several hours, one spiked buco juice, a bowl of fresh ceviche con pescado, and a bag of ChexMix later, we were back at the hostel. By 8 pm, I was out like a light!
Saturday, we headed to Quepos to book beds at another hostel, Wide Mouth Frog, before heading down to Manuel Antonio National Park. We arrived with full water bottles and empty stomachs, so it was only a matter of time before h-anger was upon us! We managed to hike for two hours in the humidity before heading for the beach. Playa Gemelas (in the picture) was my favorite site of the weekend! Tucked away in the park, this beach was small and covered in rocks, but it was so peaceful. If I had had a hammock and a good book, I would have never left! While in the park, I was able to see...
a SLOTH!
a toucan
several monkeys
crabs
a raccoon, digging through the garbage (big surprise)
an ugly, brown, frog
My first weekend in Costa Rica was definitely a success! I was able to experience so many new things. The hostels were great, and I have no idea why it has taken me 25 years to stay in one. It is the best way to travel! They are so affordable, and you get to meet people from all over the world. TIP: bring a lock.
Tomorrow will be my last day at Hogar de Ancianos. It has been such a rewarding challenge, but I cannot wait to start at my new site! I will be moving to the HIV/AIDS clinic on Tuesday, which is what I wanted initially. I am excited to see what God has in store for me this week!
