Blasting show tunes in the car for an hour and half and then we finally we reached our destination, the city of brotherly love. We found our way to the Philadelphia Collection Fashion Show at Macy’s. As we entered the store I couldn’t help but be slightly overwhelmed by the sheer majesty of the store. I couldn’t believe we were finally here, I was at my first fashion show, and I was ready to experience this new world. I’m an English major with an affinity for photography and fashion, so this was totally new experience for me. I felt like Alice in Wonderland. I was one of the only non-fashion major on the trip but I didn’t mind, it gave me a different perspective.
Everyone was excited and the positive energy radiated throughout all ten of us. Since we arrived at Philadelphia rather early, we had an opportunity to explore the surrounding area. All ten of us looked at our surroundings trying to decide where to go. We ended up splitting up and exploring stores on our own. I spent quite some time in one of the stores, Jack Willis. I consider myself an anglophile, so getting the opportunity to shop around this store was big deal for me. After spending about an hour deciding what to purchase, it was time to get back for the show.
Six of us got the opportunity to actually sit down at the show. Across from me, three of the other girls sat behind Jay Mccarroll from Project Runway. None of us could believe their luck. I took out my camera and got ready to snap some photos of the show. Being in the second row, I was able to have a great view of the runway. The show had begun after a couple announcements, the energy was incredible and you could tell everyone was thrilled to be there. The first model came out in a camel a-line coat piped with black leather with a matching dress underneath. The model was wearing black leather mid-length boots with gold detailing, the bag matched. I began to snap photos, I focused on model and her lines whereas others focused on the garment itself. It’s a lot different hearing a fashion major describe something as opposed to a photographer like myself, both give totally different perspectives. The show featured Clothes at Macy’s and some up and coming designers.
After the show, we got to shop the collections, I fell in love with one of the up and coming designers and explored her rack of ready to wear items. I ended up falling in love with a bright pink and black dress. The dress was made out of a tee-shirt like material, complete with a black peter pan collar and tiered skirt. I just had to get it, in that moment I switched perspectives. I experienced the clothing not just in the show but as model as I tried on her sample. Every once in a while its nice to look at things from a different perspective.
