Cara had been nodding off finally. Sleep evaded her as of late, the few moments of fitful rest she did fall into far from tranquil. The Temple had taken that from her, and back were the dreams of rats.
Rats. Rats everywhere. Clawing. Biting. Eating. Tearing.
She often awoke covered in a cold sweat, fear coursing through her veins. And it shamed her. Made her feel self-loathing. Because she was a Mord-Sith. She was supposed to be above this. Yet at night, in her bed after those night terrors, she was nothing more than a woman with a haunted mind.
It pained her even more, because she could see the concern in Kahlan’s eyes, in Zed’s eyes… In Richard’s eyes. It made her anger burn hotter, though none knew it was more to herself than them. As she was now, she was weak, exposed. One with fear was one who could be broken, and she had to be unbreakable. It was her job. It was her duty. It was her purpose.
She had to protect Richard.
How could she protect him from her own weakness?
She was failing him, unable to serve him as he needed, unable to serve him as he deserved.
Her door crept open, and she heard the soft pad of feet against her floor, the gait one familiar to her.
He whispered her name once: “Cara.”
She did not respond, letting him think she was still asleep. Perhaps he would leave then. All day, he’d kept trying to speak with her, and she had been avoiding him. There was nothing she wished to speak about, least of all to him. Because then he would see how weak she was, and she would have to leave.
The bed dipped with his weight, and she felt him climb over toward her. He stopped just next to her, and she could feel the weight of his stare on her face.
“I know you’re awake, Cara. You’re the lightest sleeper I know.”
Reluctantly her eyes opened, looking up at his face. The shadows of the night played on them, making his solemn expression seem etched into his face, the lines that were beginning to form- from stress, she was sure, and the constant weariness that came with the war- cast harsher in this light. Had she been any other kind of woman, she would have pulled him to her, would have smoothed out those lines with tender touches and loving kisses. Would have whispered soft words of affection to drive that look from his face, and would have pulled him into peaceful sleep by her side.
–––––– But she was not another kind of woman. She was a Mord-Sith, though a faulted one right now. And so she sat up, and quick as lightning had him pinned beneath her to the bed, her thighs straddling his waist in what could only be called suggestive. She leaned down, her forearms on either side of his head, and pressed her body down against his, feeling the hard expanse of his body beneath her.
“How can I serve you, my Lord?” she whispered, her breath ghosting over his lips, her eyes watching them with what she knew would be seen as hunger, but was nothing more than an attempt to keep from looking in his eyes. This… this was something she knew. Mord-Sith knew how to inflict all kinds of pain, but also all kinds of pleasure. Their bodies were made to serve the Lord Rahl, in all things. However he wished.
“Would you have me tend to your frustrations?” she purred, dropping a kiss to his jaw, working her way down the line of it to his neck. “Would you have me tend to your needs?” She shifted her weight to one arm, pressing against him more as her other hand trailed down his side, fingers dipping beneath his tunic to graze feather-light over the skin of his hip in circles. “You need but ask, and it will be done, my Lord. None ever need know. I exist to serve you, my Lord, in all ways. My body is yours to use as you please.”
Concern had overflown the group over the past few days, though none so more then, Richard. He had known the look of madness, the look Mord'Sith and he shared due to the training. He knew of the magic that haunted the Agiel. And he knew that Cara, despite her best efforts to thwart he's concerns, was suffering.
He had waited until all went to bed, before sneaking out of his own room. Cara, had been avoiding him all day, which in turn only proved to grow his concerns. With his best sneak, he climbed into her bed, knowing full well she was awake and aware of his presence.
"Cara," He whispered, his hand touching her shoulder softly, “I know you’re awake, Cara. You’re the lightest sleeper I know.”
And with a sigh, he soon realized these were the wrong words to say to her. Especially when she pinned him down underneath her, her thighs straddling his waist as she took his jaw into her mouth. Of course she would go there, thinking he wished to take advantage of her. And despite his claims of wishing to be natural, he could not help but suck in his breath.
With a groan, he fought any urges he felt at that moment, as his big hands gripped her shoulder lightly, pulling her off of him as he sat up in the bed. With her now on his lap, and he giving them enough distance to look upon each other, he knew that if someone walked in, they would see a love scene other then what this really was: An intervention.
"Enough of that, Cara... You know I would never take advantage of you. I care to much for you to do that. I simply came in here to talk, to be a shoulder for you to lean on. Now, out with it, tell me what is plaguing your mind enough for you to avoid me?"
