Wiganese Project Evaluation
Whilst currently finishing up the sketchbook work now the project has been massively enjoyable for me and allowed me to work in a variety of ways. Having been given the opportunity to choose any area of interest for my NMP I wanted to make the project personal and something I could proudly put in my portfolio as a showstopper piece, being proud of my Wigan heritage I wanted to make it a focal point.
Further to this is my accent and the dialect of Wigan, summarised in how bad it is with the availability of an app entitled iWiganese. Working off this basis I wanted to produce visual pieces in both print and digital that played on this concept and too a degree only I would understand.
The project overall has enabled me to work in numerous disciplines looking at initially typography and speech to photography and composition, taken further into bespoke book making/postcards and digital application in the form of an app.
Having realized how complicated my accent can be at times to people I wanted to keep the concept really basic and opted to use famous icons both past and present, taking single quotes and converting these into Wiganese. Applying these in posters design whereby the photography backdrop related to the quotes, of which took the form of my ‘Fat Harry’ typeface.
The typeface was an exploration and development of the local Wigan character fat harry and worked in representing the Wiganese dialect and speech to further develops the overall concept, further tying the aspects together.
The project has further allowed me to practice my skills for the signage company I work for and has been a learning curve in working to large scale pieces, including preparation, material selection, application of both design and print and finishing applications as well as the methods involved.
Having just finished up everything the project makes you realize just how much work can be produced in a lengthy space of time with my other products/designs developing the range of content and suitable application to enhance and not just bolster my portfolio and sketchbook.
Collectively the pieces work cohesively and have developed out of refinement, perseverance and consistency to each other, with the range developing based on what was right to better enhance or demonstrate the Wiganese concept better.
This eventually developed into a series of 8 posters, in varying A2, A1 and A0 prints utilising matte and gloss vinyl, a guide to Wiganese demonstrating the key aspects in 10 selected quotes, postcards promoting the characters of Wigan and the origins of Wiganese and a Wiganese app allowing people to Wiganese their photos with an Instagram style app, allowing users to select and implement Wiganese quotes.
The project has been challenging, expansive and above all enjoyable and running throughout my NMP has meant I’ve always been able to utilise this project as my safety net and push the work in terms of potential and the development from this. See my sketchbook to prove it. It’s massive.
