It was a day like all the others before them, tough. Theta’s feet dragged as he trudged into his quarters, shutting the door behind him. The usual beep came from the locking mechanism, ensuring his place was locked and secure with only those with direct access allowed to enter. However, he didn’t even hear the beep, in fact he could barely hear the door slam behind him. It must have slammed since he felt the floor vibrate from the impact.
His ears rang from the week long constant sound of sirens and explosions. The war was drawing closer and closer to an end and Theta wasn’t sure which side would survive, if any.
A defeated sigh escaped from him as he gave up his journey to his bedroom and elected to resting on the couch instead. Turning into his living area, he paused at the door, completely shocked to see a young well dressed woman sitting on the couch and apparently working on paperwork.
“Wrong apartment,” he told her, hand resting on the handle of his pistol. Yet he wasn’t graced with a response. Perhaps she was just as deafened as he was, raising his voice his repeated the statement but the woman didn’t even flinch. Now worried, Theta withdrew his weapon and slowly approached the woman. “Earth calling intruder?”
Theta stood beside the woman now and stared down at the work she was- wait correcting? She was reviewing homework. Curiosity overtook his worry as he reached out to poke her and distract her from her work so she could finally explain what was happening.
Yet the moment he touched her, she vanished - the papers too. Theta rubbed his eyes, making sure it wasn’t a trick of the light. No, she had vanished. Thinking he was just exhausted and seeing things, he shook his head and turned back to his attempt to get into bed.
