I have been thinking some more about Lestat and Jazz and I think he would be a huge Duke Ellington fan. There’s so many songs in Duke’s style & repertoire that I think he would like but I think he would adore East St. Louis Toodle-oo. We all know he loves all things Louis (very “I do everything for Louis”), but further the song is based on a DIRGE. Which is drumroll please a FUNERAL SONG. Is there anything more dark and romantic and Lestat than a funeral song named after his undead lover…I need to sit down.

Also bonus points the song plays in episode 5 at 36:30 so shoutout the writers ily ❤️

Lestat has some major music ball knowledge for a 1920s European and I want to talk about it. (psa I am no expert, just a music nerd)

For starters, I want to lay out a timeline. Lestat arrives in New Orleans in 1910. Jazz was introduced to Europe during WW1 by Black American Bandleader James Reese around 1914. While the French absolutely loved it, (and although I think Lestat would have been on top of that shit,) Lestat would have left his country by the time Jazz hit Europe, making it pretty much brand new to him. This makes his quote in s1.ep1 even more interesting: he says “ [I was] floating past your village, when I [heard] music playing in the shadows [...]”. Lestat basically tells Louis that he disembarked in New Orleans because he heard music, which I can presume was probably some form of early jazz.

We meet Lestat at Fair Play Saloon (Azalea before the Azalea). While it makes sense that Lestat would be there for the women, I imagine that he probably would've followed the music that compelled him to literally unload his coffin there. Lestat also makes a point of buying drinks for all the musicians in this scene too, saying something about how “ils sont toujours oubliées” (they are always forgotten). they make it so clear before season 3 that music is important to this man.

We very quickly learn about Lestat’s Piano talents in s1.ep3. Lestat embarasses jazz legend Jelly Roll Morton (a real dude btw), and goes on to improvise Minuet in G into “The Wolverine Blues.” This is bonkers to me. I will clarify that he has been in New Orleans for about 7 years now (according to the wiki it is 1917), so it makes sense he would absorb his local music scene. However, I am still amazed at this ability. I am now reminding myself that he would have had 157 years of piano experience at this point but whatever. The man can play and basically taught himself blues with no teacher. Moving on.

In conclusion Lestat knows fucking ball and it makes sense now why he would become a fucking rockstar despite growing up in the 1700s. Who is more apt to bring back hairbands in 2026 than a vampire who was into Jazz before it was cool in Europe. I cannot wait to watch TVL and thanku for reading my ramble!!!
