Adventures of a GM Noob: Lost Tales of Ixalis - Session One
So, the real session one and the real start of our heroes' adventure. They're not a group yet, but they will be soon enough. I have to admit to being super-excited for this.
Now at level 2, our heroes all find themselves in the small town of Bent Bridge on the first day of the new year. It also happens to be the first day of the new millennium on the Calendar of the Platinum Dragon, 1000 Anno Draco Metallum. The calendar is marked from the day of Bahamut's victory over Tiamat and her allies in the kingdom of K'Zesk. It is a day of celebration across the entire continent.
Bent Bridge is celebrating with a tournament of arms, featuring the members of the local adventuring group the Marauding Maidens, one of whom is the sister of the town blacksmith. As the heroes all get wind of it, they all enter for various reasons.
Corwin enters because it seems like a good test of skill. Elsie, who has been learning how to use a sword from Corwin, wants to test her newfound abilities. Aekthul, who is still learning about his abilities from his mysterious patron wants to test those abilities, but is far more interested in the pot that is promised. The Caretaker, who through a series of miscommunications has come to be called Mimi, enters to keep an eye on Aekthul. And Kiran enters just because it sounds like fun and he wants to meet people.
They each spend their morning in various activities. Corwin spends more time training Elsie, with Aekthul looking on and eventually participating a little. Kiran searches the nearby Brightglen Forest for a suitable piece of wood to make a new holy symbol to Freydis. Unfortunately, all he has to work with is a dagger and Mimi soon steps in to make sure he doesn't lose a finger.
By the time the tournament comes about, they find that they have been joined by the five members of the Marauding Maidens.
The first match up is between Corwin and the dragonborn paladin, Surajit. They face off in honorable combat and Surajit yields to Corwin.
Mimi then went up against the local born dwarven cleric Grouach. With similar abilities they found themselves evenly matched, but Grouach won the day.
Aekthul then went up against the elf wizard Farani and beat her quite soundly.
Kiran then faced off with the human fighter Miri. Rather unprepared for the skills of a trained soldier, Kiran lost to her.
And for the last matchup in the first round, Elsie went against the half-elven bard Lariel. The fight was unconventional, to say the least, as Elsie fell back on her hiding skills as a rogue to hide in some nearby bushes on the edge of the field. Lariel responded by covering the general area around Elsie with a sleep spell, winning the day as it was ruled that her opponent had been incapacitated.
For the second round, Corwin goes up again Grouach and bests her with a move that he learned from her own uncle back in his military days. Grouach laughs it off, saying that she thought the sound thumping felt familiar.
Aekthul then goes up against Miri. He, too, is unprepared for her skills as a fighter, though he fares better than Kiran did. He just wasn't able to hold out long enough.
With an odd number of participants, Lariel is left without an opponent. To even things up, she bows out of the competition.
The finals then come down to the two trained soldiers, Corwin and Miri. It is an intense fight, with the two of them going largely blow for blow and each having to tap into their hidden reserves of strength. But Corwin eventually wins the day. Miri then reveals that she recognized his name as one that her father had gone up against and been bested by during the war of Aurician Independence. She says she is glad to see that he lives up to his reputation as an honorable man and the two of them quit the field together amicably with Corwin the champion of the tournament and winning the 50 gold pot.
The rest of the day is filled with further merriment and partying. Elsie gets in a drinking contest with the blacksmith Louach and finds herself far outmatched.
Aekthul enters the pie eating contest, though he was just in it for the free food and calmly eats only one pie to the confusion of the other entrants.
Finally, the local druid elf closes out the night by treating the town to a fireworks display. However, in the middle of it, all of the fireworks suddenly go off at once and the assembled crowd is attacked by a crazed looking barbarian and two armored knights.
As this was the first real session of the plotline, I wanted to give each player a chance to shine with the skills on their character sheets. A tournament is always something I've wanted to try in an RPG and level 2 seemed a good place for it, since lower hitpoint totals would keep any one fight from dragging out too long. It seemed to go pretty well and everyone seemed to have a good time while getting to play with their characters a bit.
I still need to work on describing action. Some of the fighting got a little repetitive, especially the fight between Corwin and Miri (because, you know, level 2 fighters... they hit things...).
Next session our heroes will begin to learn who the mysterious attackers are.
Until then!
