the izuruki coffee shop au no one asked for

anyways this is my contribution to the digimon otp week – the incredibly self indulgent izuruki (izumi orimoto/ruki nonaka) coffee shop au no one asked for, particularly bc im probably the only person who ships this??? more under the cut

first of all its in bullet points bc i cant write for shit how ironic

izumi is the cute but also one of the youngest baristas that works in a coffee shop that is PRETTY MUCH a hipster’s wet dream. 

she’s also hella gay, seventeen, and very much single.

let me tell u more about this coffee shop bc @varichina​ gave me a great idea. the rest of the staff consists of wallace, takeru, yamato, toma, and probably kiriha even if i dont rly know much about him. i think im gonna add juri and hikari to the staff too just to keep things under control. 

naturally u guys see where this is going right. this coffee shop is a living shitpost. but its popular bc its mostly run by blondes.

also in this au takeru and hikari are dating?? hikari’s the owner/manager of the place and takeru is her boyfriend that works there too. they are Adults.

i get the feeling though that toma would be the one making the pastries in the back. he only talks to the regulars who sit in the back 

anyways ruki, who’s eighteen and just moved to the neighborhood and doesn’t really know places yet, until one day on reading week, she finds a coffee shop that’s perfct for writing all three essays she has due the next week. 

so the first time she goes is a sunday and is immediately taken aback by how by izumi’s beautiful smile, hair, eyes, height, everything. 

so ruki keeps coming back on weekdays and befriends the entire barista staff (takeru and wallace get on her nerves with bad jokes and fuckboy-but-not-rly-a-fuckboy attitudes, but she’s thankful for hikari, who scolds them) 

but she never sees izumi when she goes and shes a bit heartbroken because who was that beautiful girl???? she doesnt want to ask bc she doesnt want to embarrass herself

but then one day when she goes on a saturday morning she’s taken aback because??? there she is!!!! the beautiful barista from the other day!!!! holy shit ruki wasn’t even aware of how thirsty she is until izumi smiles when she sees her and says something like “its you again! from that one time! what can i get you?” 

and ruki is dying on the inside because oh my god she remembers me

ruki gets her usual (which is a cortado and a lemon bar) and of COURSE introduces herself to izumi, so now they know each other’s names o yeah wiggles eyebrows

ruki keeps coming back especifically in the weekends to see the apple of her eye. 

also note!!: ruki becomes a regular there and all the other baristas know her and her order. 

izumi tho is such a ray of sunshine because she actually loves her job. she’s always smiling and asking the costumers or AT LEAST the other regulars about how they’re doing and saying that she’s glad to see them. 

but whenever ruki comes over she immediately goes “i’m so happy to see you!” or if ruki speaks first and asks her how she’s doing, izumi will say something like “im so much better now that you’re here.” 

and sometimes they start talking on the counter and have nice and sweet conversations before the manager (probably hikari tbh) reminds izumi that she has to continue taking orders. 

hikari probably also winks at them because she knOWS that something is going on.

or when izumi is making coffees they usually have nice small talk. 

or when izumi’s working but there aren’t a lot of costumers, ruki will seat at the bar and talk with izumi for hours. takeru sometimes joins the conversation and teases them.

there are days in which ruki goes there specifically to do work, even if she really wants to talk to izumi, but she swears she hears wallace say “izumi, do you need a cup of water?” (((listen if u didnt get this, the joke is that wallace caught izumi staring at ruki and he laughed and he told her to drink some water to quench her fucking thirst)

ON A FATEFUL DAY OF MAY izumi mentions that a few days ago was her birthday and ruki’s surprised because she didn’t know this. 

however what she thinks about immediately is that izumi is a taurus. so she brings it up because tauruses are all amazing people and she thinks she likes izumi a little bit way more.

izumi confirms it but she asks why that’s relevant and ruki tells her that she’s always found tauruses to be incredible people and that she’s always seemed to get along with them. 

and listen here, izumi looks at her straight in the eye, smile, and tells her that maybe they were meant to be

this immediately fries ruki’s brain and she starts stuttering and almost spills her coffee and holy shit was she flirting?? was she really gay??? holy shit holy shit.

hopefully takeru and hikari are there to save her. kind of. not really. takeru says something like “oh? soulmates? are you guys going out then?”

hikari slaps him playfully and tells him not to intrude, and that they probably have, then he apologizes for him. 

but this actually helps because izumi ends up writing her number with a heart besides it on ruki’s to-go cup. 

ruki notices after she’s home, when she’s about to throw away the cup holy shit that was a close one. she blushed SO HARD because it must be izumi’s number. 

so she texts her immediately that night but she dOESNT KNOW HOW TO GO ABOUT IT BECAUSE SHE’S SO NEW TO DATING???? but somehow she ends up asking izumi out on a date. 

ruki goes back to the coffee shop a few days later (when izumi’s not working) and everyone straight up congratulates her for asking izumi out.

then they go out and start dating thaT’S IT???? 

sorry the ending sucked guys but i really dont know what else to write this was kinda rushed?? this is also largely based on mY coffee shop au experience which sadly i never got to finish living out,, rip my ass

it’s lesbian visibility day and that means more izuruki headcanons!!!

literally what no one else but me has been asking for since 2016

so

in the translation of the new cd drama, they mentioned that Izumi became a model and this head canon is based solely on that

so!!!!!!

Izumi works in the same modelling company as Rumiko (Ruki’s mom) and they’re often hired together to play mother and daughter

Rumiko absolutely loves this because Izumi is feminine and bouncy and all those things she wanted Ruki to be. This does not mean that she doesn’t love Ruki just the way she is (BECAUSE SHE DOES), but she still misses having/not having that type of relationship with her daughter.

So one way or another, Rumiko becomes a mom figure in the modelling industry for Izumi, and Izumi really loves this because Rumiko has been so helpful in helping her establish a career as a model.

Ruki, who sometimes gets dragged into going to the photoshoots (she doesn’t model tho), notices how caring her mom is towards Izumi and she absolutely hates Izumi at the beginning. And she doesn’t care to hide it.

But really its because she’s jealous because she thinks that her mom likes Izumi best, and she finds it so annoying how Izumi is so pretty with her blonde hair and green eyes and how it’s so hard to hate her because she’s also really nice and grounded and she’s never been mean to Ruki but ugh why is she also Ruki’s exact type??

So apparently Ruki has a crush on Izumi. huh. And guess what. Rumiko knows this. The grandma knows this. Takato and Jenrya and Renamon and literally everyone knows this.

And do you wanna know what makes things worse???? It’s like Izumi knows too because all of a sudden whenever Ruki goes to the shoots (which is more often), she flirts with her? And tells her how cool she is? And hold up??? Did Izumi just ask her for coffee when the shoot is over???

so they go for coffee and they have such a good time and Ruki talks about the digimon card game and Izumi talks about being italian i guess and she tries to learn how to play the game. she ends up thinking that Ruki and Kouji would probably get along

its all pretty much going well and they start making it a thing to meet for coffee after every shoot. And then coffee turns into dinner. And dinner turns into going to the movies. And going to the movies turns into sometimes Ruki walking Izumi home and other times Izumi walking Ruki home.

SO U KNOW that they’re going on DATES and being SHY about it and they start talking SO much all time but we’re keeping this real, they’re lesbians and they’re oblivious and they’re still asking their friends “do you think she likes me???” And “should I ask her out on a date???”

everyone is kind of done with their obliviousness at one point.

so one day Izumi decides to invite Ruki to meet her friends and the guys are kinda hinting at how Izumi has a big fat crush on Ruki but Ruki gets Angry (she’s obviously an Aries?? Duh) bc she thinks they’re making fun of her and she tells them she’s fed up and leaves.

Izumi (obviously) goes after her and asks her why she did that, and Ruki tells her that her friends are making fun of her (Ruki) for liking her (Izumi), and Izumi is blushing and she has to explain that no, they were teasing her (Izumi) for liking (Ruki) and not doing anything about it.

And Ruki goes all tsundere like oh pft why didn’t you say so, we could’ve been dating ages ago. She’s trying to be smooth but its not working and Izumi kinda giggles at  that and kisses her cheek and the rest is historyyyyy

also whenever Ruki visits the photoshoots to see Izumi, and her mom happens to be there, Rumiko teases Ruki so much. But its okay, because Rumiko obviously approves of Izumi

Who holds the umbrella when it rains

Ruki does because she’s taller but then again she’s so embarrassed about it because they are standing so close to each other and honestly Izumi would probably say something sweet spontaneously and Ruki would just blush and look away and cry a little inside. Izumi would probably be crying on the inside too but she’s not a huge grump like Ruki is so she wouldn’t be very embarrassed and just smile about being able to be so close to her girlfriend.

Who is the grumpiest in the morning

Ruki is the big grump so of course she would be grumpy in the morning? But, like, just after she’s been woken up because Izumi would probably cuddle up to her and kiss her on the cheeks and on the lips until Ruki agreed to get out of bed. When they are in the kitchen table eating breakfast Izumi asks her why if she doesn’t like what she’s eating because she’ll probably be picking at it and glaring at it. Ruki would just look at her and tell her maybe she would eat her breakfast properly if someone hadn’t woken her up.

Who worries more when the other is sick/hurt

SO OLIVE (Ruki-mun) AND I ACTUALLY HEADCANONNED THIS SO HARD OKAY. 

Izumi, definitely, Izumi.

Apart from the fact that she’s a mother hen in her own way, we used to have a headcanon in which both of them lived really far away from each other and one time Ruki got really really sick.

At first Ruki wasn’t feeling so bad, just a little dizzy and sneezing a little more than normal. The second she told Izumi that she wasn’t feeling so well, Izumi started asking her if she was okay and all that cute stuff to make sure that her gf is okay. But then Ruki starts feeling actually really sick, like, she’s barfing all over the place and sweating a lot. Izumi would obviously find out and she would be on her way to Ruki’s with homemade chicken soup (She obviously called Kouichi and asked him what to do when someone was sick cause besties duh). 

Their texts would be so funny, though. Ruki would probably ask her where she was and Izumi would tell her that she’s on her way and Ruki would go like “I’M GONNA BARF IN MY BUCKET IF YOU DON’T SHOW UP IN TWENTY MINUTES” and Izumi would just be baffled but she’d get there in under 20. 

Also extra because I just thought of this but Photograph by Ed Sheeran is kinda their song cause they live far away from each other so they see each other mostly on weekends so this one time Izumi gave Ruki one of those necklaces that open and she put a picture of them together inside it and I’m so ;w;

Neither. 

Who is always the first to suggest cuddling on the sofa?

It’s kind of a mutual thing, honestly. I think that Ruki would get embarrassed easily when it comes to cute or romantic things because she used to mask her feelings a lot, but she actually loves to cuddle and loves to initiate it but she’s so embarrassed about it. Izumi also loves to cuddle and she would probably take Ruki’s arm sometimes and put it around her and that’s how it starts.

I know that the question is who suggests it first but like what is that supposed to mean is that like “oh hey do you wanna cuddle” it sounds so forced and awkward idk? Then again that would definitely be Ruki, now that I think about it. She would be so shy and slightly tsundere about it but Izumi would think that it’s adorable, that she’s adorable and would probably kiss her shortly and then they’d be cuddling and now I’m crying this girlfriends are so cute they are my favorite girlfriends.

Who insists on creating nicknames for the other

IZUMI BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'D CALL EACH OTHER. I think that Ruki would spend a long time thinking about her nickname for Izumi but Izumi would figure it out pretty quickly.

Who drools on the other when they’re asleep

This rarely happens, but Ruki. Honestly, it’s so rare that the first time it happens, Izumi is just a little annoyed but then again she’s literally whipped so she ended up reassuring Ruki that it was slightly adorable.

Who says ‘I love you’ first

Jesus Christ this could go both ways okay so I’m just gonna write them both because I obviously love writing headcanons about my girlfriends.

If Izumi said it first

She would probably be talking to Ruki at the park or something and then it would hit her like bang like she would just realize holy shit I’m in love with you and she would probably just tell her “I love you” so calmly with a big smile on her face but she would honestly be so scared because although she knows how to deal with rejection well, this time it matters so much to her because god damn this is the girl she’s actually in love with. Ruki would probably freeze at first but then she would smile at her a lot and even if she still wasn’t ready to tell her that she loved her too, she would be so so happy because dang.

If Ruki said it first

It would probably go like this: 

I think that Izumi would probably be resting her head on Ruki’s shoulder with her eyes closed because the little shit loves doing that. So Ruki would probably think that she’s asleep and she would start caressing her hair and start talking to her, but Izumi would just be quiet oh gosh, and then Ruki would eventually tell her, “… and, Izumi, I… I really love you.” 

Izumi would then stretch her neck and kiss her girlfriend and then they would look at each other in the eyes and she would tell her that she loves her too and Ruki would be blushing so much and I am crying right now I need this in a thread please.

Bonus/Optional: Type how they died.

Her heart took a drop to the stomach as her eyes widened, as she rested her back against the wall. No, this wasn’t happening. Not to them. Not to her.  Her eyes started to water as her hands automatically moved to cover her face. Before she knew it, Izumi was running her hands through her hair repeatedly, trying to pull herself together. Her breathing became short paused as  her grip on her hair become tighter and tighter, up to the point where it almost hurt. This couldn’t happen to them, to either of them. It couldn’t. It couldn’t. Digimon were not even supposed to be in the Real World. This was… this was all a lie then, right?

But then, as her heartbeat sped up, her green eyes became wide ever so slowly. Her chest fell, and an empty feeling engulfed her from the inside. It wasn’t like that for the redhead, wasn’t it? She battled digimon daily. She lived for it. She encountered them all the time and managed to defeat them with her digimon partner. 

It was then when the blonde felt her heart break into pieces, and everything else stopped mattering. Hot tears were running down her cheeks as she covered her mouth with both of her hands, holding back a sob. The truth that she had been trying to avoid surrounded her in an asphyxiating way. Ruki was so young. She was so young, she was only fourteen and she had so much to live for still. 

She was going to grow up! She was going to graduate and get a job, maybe she would fall in love with someone and marry them and maybe even have kids! But… not anymore. The future that she believed she could have with the redhead was impossible. The future that Ruki was destined to have had been taken away from her, stripped from her without being able to have a say in it. 

Lips became inevitably chewed as Izumi rested her back on the wall behind her, letting herself slowly descend, until she was hugging her knees. Her tear-stained face was buried in the space between her legs and her chest, and her red, puffy eyes refused to open until the pain stopped. She sobbed loudly once again, feeling herself grow colder and colder by the moment as she stared to the roof, wondering why.

Slowly, then, a new burning feeling began to surge inside of her as her fists balled up tightly. Her eyes narrowed and her breathing was slightly louder than before. This is why she hated the idea of digimon in the Real World! That was why she would never feel reluctant to say that she had fought to keep them from invading their world. Look at what had happened! 

Izumi knew that not all of them were bad, but she could only imagine how many casualties would have happened if evil digimon had invaded Earth. The blonde sighed, hugging herself tightly, tears quickly streaking down her cheeks, and her breath still slightly rough. She cocked her head slightly, remembering the last time she had seen the girl she was shamelessly in love with. That night, she wished, that this could all be a ‘see you later’ and not a ‘goodbye’.

The blonde became a stuttering, blushing mess. Out of all people, why did it have to be her partner? She sighed, pulling herself together.

"T-the one that I like is… it’s Ruki-chan," she tried not to mumble as she admitted her feelings for the first time. Was she even sure she liked her? Sure, her heart usually raced whenever she was around but it didn’t mean that. She looked away, trying to hide her blush. Who was she trying to convince? She was definitely smitten.
