I pull my hair back into a pony tail, about to start my twenty hour shift at the hospital. I walk into the on-call room and see Alex. He looks at me quickly and and wipes his eyes.
“Get out, Y/n!” He shouts at me.
“Sorry.” I close the door and close my eyes, wanting to crawl into a hole and die. Alex and I got together, and it’s been pretty awkward ever since. That interaction definitely didn’t help my situation at all. I walk down the hall, trying to finding my interns. I see all the residents in front of Dr. Bailey, and I follow suit.
“Good. Y/l/n, have you seen Karev?” Bailey asks me.
“U-uh, n-n-no. I h-haven’t.” I stutter, I’m not going to call out Alex.
“Right here.” I hear him say behind me. I don’t turn to him, and I see Izzie looking at me, questioning what’s going on with her eyes. I widen my eyes at her, and shake my head at her.
“Okay, Grey and Yang, you’re on Shepherd’s service and Dixon is here. I believe they have surgeries today, but you are going to do their charts unless they call you into surgery.”
“But, Dixon is having congenital bypass surgery today, I’m due to scrub in.” Christina fights.
“Don’t talk to me, talk to Dixon. Stevens, you’re on clinic. Karev, and Y/l/n, you’re on trauma. I believe it’s Hunt. Everyone walks away, going to their stations.
“I-I can’t w-work with Karev. I walked in o-on something personal this morning.” I tell her, playing with my fingers. I get nervous talking about other people unless it’s a patient.
“Y/n, you are a doctor. You don’t have to invite Karev over for dinner, just have to work. So go, do your job. Go. Go.” She shoos me and I sigh before going to the trauma area.
“Nice of you to join, Dr. Y/l/n. We have a trauma coming in.” I nod, and follow him out to the trauma bay and quickly have a nurse tie the back of my yellow scrubs. I thank her and I put gloves ready for the patient. I hear the siren of the ambulance getting closer.
The ambulance stops and the medics open the door and start speaking.
“Natalie Fords. Twenty one, got into an accident at the park. Was hit with a baseball then bit by a random dog. BP is 80 over 42. Vitals are stable as of now, but had a seizure before departure.” I look at the girl. Her arm has a chunk of it out. Her head is bleeding, and I’m able to see bone. She must have hit her head on the way down. There’s another ambulance coming.
“Y/n, Karev, you take her. Page Shepherd and Sloan. You can handle this, yes?” We both nod and run into the hospital. We take her to Trauma Room 2. Two of my interns are there, and also a few nurses.
“Push two of morphine.” I say and check the girls heart. She has a steady heart rate. I tell Karev, and he grunts in response. Both Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Sloan show up at the same time. Shepherd checks her head, while Sloan checks her arm.
“What going here?” Shepherd asks.
“She got hit with a baseball, and bit by a dog. She had a seizure before they departed.” I tell them.
“Since she is stable, we can get her in for an MRI and CT scan. Sloan, how the arm?”
“It looks okay. Definitely gnawed on, but i can patch it up. Run a few blood tests to find if there is any harmful bacteria. Page me after the tests. For now flush it with saline, and put a bandage on it, it should be okay.” Sloan gets up and leaves.
“Karev, get that bandage for her and put it on. Y/l/n, get her ready for the tests.” I nod, and he leaves.

The girl still hasn’t woken up when we put her in the MRI machine. We start the machine, and sit in the little waiting/watching area.
“Alex, I-.” But I get cut off.
“No.”
“Alex, I can help you. Just tell me what’s-.” I get cut off again.
“No, Y/n! I don’t need or want you to talk to me. You think you can change me and be a part of my life after we were together for one night. I don’t need some stupid, spoiled brat trying to console me of my feelings! You are too blinded by your privilege to understand what everyone else goes though! You don’t know everything! You-.” I wince at what he saying, but soon notice the girl in the machine, she’s seizing again.
“Alex.” I say while he continues.
“No, shut up.” ^^^ He says, but I brush past him and run to the girl. He sees what I’m doing, calls out for someone to page Shepherd. I pull her on her side, leaking the fluids that come from her mouth. I hear the heart monitor flatline, and I start doing chest compressions.
“Get a crash cart in here!” I shout at Alex. He nods, and I continue to do compressions. A nurse runs in with an intubator. Alex puts it in, and pushes air into her chest. The crash cart comes to me, and I sigh with relief. “Charge to two-hundred. Clear!” I push the paddles onto her, and her body jolts the falls back. I look up at the monitor, and nothing happens. “Charge three hundred. Clear.” I do it once more, and her body jolts. I look again to the monitor, and it starts to beep. I sigh, and grab the intubator to keep air going into her lungs. Dr. Shepherd comes in, and looks at us.
“What happened?” He asks.
“She seized, and coded. I got her back. I’m still intubating just in case.” I tell him.
“Why didn’t you notice it before she coded?” He questions. I look at Alex, and come up with something.
“She coded almost immediately after seizing. By the time I could get into the room, she was pretty much coding. I just couldn’t get in there fast enough.” I tell him.
“Okay. Well, you got her back, good job. Next time we need to be more urgent. Understood? Finish the scan, we definitely need surgery. Karev, you’ll scrub in on this one. I trust you can finish the scan.” I shift my eyes to the ground, and groan. Alex yelled at me, I saved the patient after she coded, then stood up for Alex, but he got the surgery.
“Y/n?”
“Yeah. Whatever, Alex.” I leave the room and go to do charting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I look up when I hear someone stomping down the hallway. It’s Alex. Dr. Shepherd comes out soon after. I go up to him.
“What happened?” I ask him.
“She seized on the table. Karev was closing up, but her movement caused the brain to bleed and to swell. She didn’t make it.” I nod.
“Oh.” I begin to walk away, but he stops me.
“I wanted to let you know that you did good in that MRI room. You saved her then. I didn’t put you on the surgery because I wanted to test Karev. You held your own in there. I could tell he didn’t help you. You’re a great doctor. I know that doesn’t make up for the surgery, but you did a great job today. Keep it up.” He smiles.
“Thank you, Dr. Shepherd .” I tell him. He nods and leaves. I walk to the room the I saw Alex go to. I can hear him screaming through the door. I decide to leave him alone for now.
I get home after my shift, and fall into my sofa. The sound of the rain against the window quickly lured me to sleep.
I wake startled, but not knowing why. I then hear a knock on my front door, and realize why I woke up. I leave my room groggily, and open my door.
“Alex?” I look at him, and he is soaked. I look at his face, and I can see he is crying, even though the rain is falling on his face. He pulses, crying still and I pull him into me. I wrap my arms around his neck, getting my clothes wet as well. He grabs onto me, and continues crying into my shoulder. “You’re okay.” I whisper to him and stroke his hair. After a few minutes, he lets me go.
“I-I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. Stay here, I’ll bring you some dry clothes.” I run to my room and grab boxers, he biggest pair of sweatpants I can find, and the biggest shirt. I look down at my shirt, and realize I’m wet as well. I quickly change into shorts and a hoodie. I run back downstairs, and hand him the clothes. I point to the bathroom, and he goes in. I go into my kitchen and start on coffee.
“Thank you, Y/n.” I hear Alex behind me.
“Of course. What’s the matter?” I ask and sit at the stool at my island.
“I just, I don’t know. That girl just threw me over the edge. I just thought about everything. It’s hard watching people die and not being able to do anything about it. To see people, leave and not being able do anything about it. It’s hard. It’s so freaking hard.” I nod and get the coffee. I pour two mugs and we walk over to the sofa.
“I know it’s hard. I’m here to listen to whatever you need, Alex.”
“I know. I’m so sorry for the way I treated you, Y/n. I don’t know how to do this whole, ‘nice to people thing’. Especially when they’re someone like you. You stood up for me today when I was the one who was screaming at you.”
“I’m okay. My brother used to do the same thing. I know that when someone is being a jerk, and yell at me, they are nicer inside. They don’t know how to show vulnerability. It’s a defense mechanism. We all have them. I get quiet and awkward when I’m upset, scared, tired, whatever.”
“You’re pretty awesome, Y/n.”
“I already know that. But, thanks.” I say. He laughs. We drink our coffee while we watch a movie, and soon fall asleep.
