Final Trailer For 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Perfectly Sets The Mood For The Film
With just over a week until J.J. Abrams highly anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness hits theatres, the studio is really amping up its marketing.
The movie is in a bit of a weird spot as it has a major blockbuster in the form of Iron Man 3 still going strong, The Great Gatsby, which should bring in a little bit of money but is getting pummelled by the critics (which I saw coming a month ago) is in the mix, the marketing for Fast & Furious 6 starting to get going and the big one Man of Steel is starting to kick ass.
No matter as the film is fantastic. It will surprise a ton of folks in my opinion and go on to be the second biggest film this summer after Man of Steel.
Yes it is that good.

(NON-SPOILERY) REVIEW - Z Has Seen 'Star Trek Into Darkness' ...
Second films have a storied background in the history of cinema. The creative shackles have been broken and the filmmaker, usually a crafty and brilliantly storyteller, is free to tell the tale they want to. The difference with the second chapter in their story is that this time around they are a little less encumbered with the pressure of a first film – The Dark Knight, Empire Strikes Back and of course Wrath of Khan are the standard-bearers.
Let’s get this out of the way right now. I am here to say unequivocally that this second film is absolutely incredible. It is far superior in every way possible than its predecessor.
And coming from someone who has seen, loved and treasured the first one, those are some mighty big words.
The recent Star Trek was a calculated, risky and quite frankly bold move. Rebooting a much beloved story like Star Trek is monumentally divisive in nature and could fail miserably. And this is where J.J. Abrams really proved his mastery as he was able to not only successfully mount a movie that the next generation could embrace, he was able to stick to the core values and touchpoints that made the original so beloved.
Years from now, when people speak of this film, it will be mentioned with the same revere and respect of not only The Dark Knight, but holy grail of sequels The Empire Strikes Back. The irony of this is not lost as the bar was set so high not only by Empire but the second film in the original Star Trek with The Wrath Of Khan which was released two years later.
Of course I want you to experience the film the same way I did, so there are no spoilers whatsoever in my review of this film. What I can say is that part of what made this film into Abrams’ Opus (so far) is not the incredible action or the twists and turns or the nerd nuggets for all the Star Trek OG’s, it was the laying of the foundation that it achieved. Not only has he successfully rebooted the series for the big screen, he has allowed himself the ability to tell the story we all grew up in his way..starting now.
I am not only excited to see this film again, I am super eager to see what’s next.
The cast has great chemistry that is only enhanced by the advancements in technology the filmmakers get to play with. Through their portrayal, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto elevate much beloved characters to a new level. Each in their own magnificent way, the rest of the cast does well however the standout of the film is the delicious portrayal of Benedict Cumberbatch‘s John Harrison. Much like Heath Ledger elevated the insane bad guy in The Dark Knight, Cumberbatch has done excellent job from the minute he comes on screen of elevating the cold calculated baddie to a whole new level. Watching him go up against Kirk and Co is the absolutely fantastic to watch.
What Abrams has proven with this film is that he is a great storyteller. Everything ties into each other with multiple layers all in a complex simplicity that is near impossible to reach in modern movie making. It is this skill that allows you to be swallowed whole into what’s happening and love the experience.
There are a few minor things that I imagine some may quibble on. It’s the nature of the beast. You can’t please every one. They are in fact so minor that it just goes to show how well put together and executed everything is.
And for those wondering if this is a ‘Star Trek movie‘, I am pleased and thrilled to let you know that it very much is. The nerd nuggets that you will find through out the film are plentiful, fun and very smartly done. I laughed out loud a few times (sometimes I was the only one that’s how obscure some are) and I quite literally marvelled at certain points and how the films and TV show I grew up with have been so lovingly and eloquently been respected.
This is a definite recommend, that’s a given.
However, the ultimate praise I give to this film is that I can’t wait to see it again and again on the big screen.
