J theory
Ok so.... I've gone down a theological rabbit hole. Probably others have gone down this hole also lol.I don't think the "J" in Anthony J Crowley is insignificant or "just a J really." If we go down the theory of a partial memory wipe for Crowley, perhaps the J comes to him as an idea because it had some significance in the past.... Like his original angel name.
I was raised in both the Greek Orthodox and Episcopal churches (Episcopal is part of the Anglican church, which is BASICALLY the reformed church of England kinda). I remember stuff from Sunday school and remembered there were more Archangels (Dominion or above level). So I did some research because my OCD brain needed a break from doom research.
What if Crowley is Jeremiel (Jerahmeel), one of the original higher order Archangels??? Here is my thinking: He (Crowley) apparently worked with Saraqael. He was entrusted with the instructions and mechanics to start the universe. The Metatron (Enoch) and him know each other. The other 3 Archangels seem to have a contemptuous feeling towards him. In Eastern Orthodox theology, he's actually originally in charge of holding the righteous souls who died after the great flood until they are allowed up to Heaven after Christ's crucifixion, as a place between heaven and hell. However, some theology has Jeremiel as a a messenger of hopes and dreams, which in the books goes along with the description of Crowley as an optimist. Jeremiel is also known for mercy. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
If Neil Gaiman went as obscure as Saraqael and Sandalphon, I wouldn't put it past him to have Crowley be Jeremiel. Below is a smattering of my inquiries and research via screenshots. Again, just a theory.
