What warrants an elimination on ABC’s singing competition Boy Band?

On this week’s episode of Boy Band, ABC’s new singing competition that exists for the sole purpose of forming a five-member singing boy band, viewers were given the second opportunity to save one contestant at the end of the episode.

One of the boys in the bottom two was J-Hype, a talented raper and beat boxer who is just fourteen years old. The architects said that he was in the bottom two because he lacks the singing talent required to be a member of the boy band that they are trying to create. I personally do not think that he should have to sing to be a part of a music ensemble, but that is what the architects want.

The other boy band-hopeful in the bottom two was Dorian, a fifteen year old singer who came to the show with loads of singing talent and dedication. The architects said that he was in the bottom two because they were not sure that he was mature enough to continue with the show, but failed to give examples of his immaturity. I thought that Dorian was very mature for a fifteen year old and did his best to succeed on the show.

J-Hype and Dorian have different talents, but only one is considered a “requirement” for what will likely turn out to be a very bland band if the architects keep acting this way. Singing is the requirement. Dorian more than met the requirement, J-Hype was working on it. 

And yet, it was Dorian who went home. Fans of the show cited racism and a rigged contest for the result, but some were just happy that J-Hype wasn’t sent home. 

I’m somewhere in between. But if this is a singing show, like the architects suggest, why have two great singers gone home? If the architects continue to force the boys to sing to be considered for the band, we will likely end up with a band of five boys who tried to produce a talent that others were born with.
