j-killa, i hear what you're saying, but i think you're missing the point of a-r's analysis, which is to explain how a kind of economic activity and organization of social life has led to the use of US military to protect a crass monarchy. all the violence and death is not to better know the devils but in service of them and at any cost. according to your last statement "better the devil you know than otherwise," i here an excuse based in conventional wisdom. thinking about this situation through the eyes of what's best for "US diplomacy" is kind of grotesque. strengthened diplomacy with Iran is a perk that, let's be honest, is not planned and doesn't fit the diplomatic narrative in that region because of US support of Israel, never mind other issues. i like a-r's concise summary because it exposes both the source of the problem and the means used to support the problem. a massive military has been implemented to protect massive unearned wealth and ambition in exchange for a bit more control of cheaply extracted resources.
