As with many artists in 2020, J. Albert has been busy in quarantine, perhaps the busiest. Whether the creative juices were overflowing or the boredom was just too much to take, Albert used his time productively with ten releases (maybe more?) in 2020. The last release of the year from Albert hits the highest and wooziest note. Young American Artist is a dizzying and dazzling ambient collection of “found sounds, field recordings, bedroom recordings, granular synthesizers, samplers.” Albert has mainly dabbled in techno, dub and house in the past but Young American Artist continues the ambient moods Albert was beginning to embrace on another release of his in 2020, the delightful my rave ended yours just began. Both albums showcase an artist pushing beyond their own boundaries to create something truly absorbing. Young American Artist is a tender and affecting listen in a year that begs for comforting moments.
