"You know what I love about changing our financial arrangement? ...I can now just pay you in food." Jacob was only teasing, of course, as he entered his home with bags of Japanese food. "Everyone wins this way, it's refreshing. Anyway, I bought you a meal, I have to leave soon, so I'm eating light. My mother is in town and... and I'll be having dinner with her. “Yeah… I have a hard time believing that.” Jacob retorted with disinterest in his voice. “We’re lucky we have this amazing sexual chemistry, and that I am okay with just this. Outside of the bedroom, I have no idea what we are– other than neighbors.” Rolling his eyes, he quickly scanned over the marks on his chest and exhaled impatiently. “You mark me like territory and then reject me like yesterday’s paper.” He noted, in almost a whisper, as his hands clasped together. “Someday you’ll find new marks, ones you’ve never made, and you’ll be wondering where it all went wrong.”

His siblings soaked up the new member of the MacKenzie clan like a sponge in a bowl of water. Noah asked the important questions: what she did for a living, where she resided, why the move, how is her mother, all the boring things a boring man could conjure. Austin asked the irrelevant ones: do you play video games, have you seen The Fast And The Furious series, would you like to see my YouTube channel, everything a little geek college boy could think of. They wanted to learn everything there was to know about Natalie, all within a dinner's time frame. Jacob, on the other hand, remained totally unbiased. Sure, she was family, but this family was crazy. This family was hilariously phony in every way possible. So when Austin went into the kitchen to wash dishes, and Noah went into his office for a business phone call, Jacob invited Natalie onto the balcony with him. He started with fake laugh. "You know, the last time I'd seen my brothers was... Austin's birthday- in January." Jacob pointed out, as if something like that should matter to the blonde. "And the last time I heard that my father would be in town was... Noah's birthday- in August. He never showed up for that, by the way. So... Perhaps I should apologize for my stand-offish attitude. It's not you, it's them, and the little game they're playing."
