> Sinbad would at first not even notice it, as he’s not an morning person, but when his s/o gets up and he’d realize the blood stain he’d call out to her, not waiting for the reply, jumping out of the bed, having the feeling something might be wrong with his lover

> Suddenly wide awake he’d get out of the bed, running to his partner’s side, asking her what happened. If she simply explains the situation he’d calm down, giving her a understanding nod and getting a little red around the nose due to embarrassment

> Assisting with the stain removal he’d not say much, not wanting to embarrass himself or his s/o anymore but when she starts apologizing for startling him he’d shake his head vigorously, stating that it was just in the beginning and he himself is even more sorry than his s/o should be about it

Last year Al Qaeda and and its local affiliate in Yemen, Ansar al-Sharia, succeeded in doing something they had never been able to do before: They boldly seized control of territory in southern Yemen – without resistance from the Yemeni army — and declared several cities, including Ja’ar and Zinjibar, “Islamic Emirates.”

In last month’s report Al Qaeda in Yemen, award-winning reporter Ghaith Abdul-Ahad journeyed to Ja’ar and other Al Qaeda-controlled areas in the south to investigate how Ansar al-Sharia has been running whole towns and cities, and working to win the hearts and minds of the local population by administering scarce resources like water and electricity.

But today the Yemeni Defense Ministry announced that the Yemeni army, which intensified its U.S.-backed campaign in the south last month, has retaken both Zinjibar and Ja’ar, and driven the militants from the cities.

“I am now speaking from the local government headquarters in Zinjibar,” Major Gen. Salem Qatan, commander of the southern region, told Reuters. “The cities of Zinjibar and Jaar have been completely cleansed.”

A spokesperson for Ansar al-Shariah also confirmed to Reuters that the army had retaken control of Ja’ar, and residents reported that “militants had left behind flyers asking inhabitants to forgive them, asserting that they had not wanted to ’cause any harm to Ja’ar and its inhabitants.’”

Despite the hefty death toll, some think the military assault might be aiding the terror group more than hurting it, sewing sympathy for the militants and anger toward the Americans.

Yemenis who live in these poverty-stricken areas, long neglected by the central government, said that with Al Qaeda now governing large parts of the region, some stability has finally arrived.

One local merchant, when asked by GlobalPost what he thought of the new government, said, “Very, very good. Very peaceful. I go to prayer knowing my store is safe. I leave the door unlocked."

The black-and-white flag of Al Qaeda flies at each entrance to the city, flapping behind Kalishnakov- and grenade-strapped soldiers on motorcycles. Other Al Qaeda soldiers patrol the city’s streets in army trucks pillaged from the Yemeni military weeks earlier.

Townspeople said Al Qaeda provided them with reliable services, such as electricity, food, water and even healthcare, though officials would not allow GlobalPost entry into the town’s only hospital, one wing of which had been shelled in recent months.

While speaking to merchants in Jaar’s central market, an elderly man with a long red beard asked GlobalPost, “Why American drones?” The sound of the drones buzzing overhead was a constant reminder, they said, of the strikes that could happen at any time.
