If you haven’t seen Jacir yet, find a way to stream it ASAP. It’s richly complex storytelling about the painful nightmare of the American Dream and what it means to lose everything you hold dear in life. Lorraine Bracco plays a truly layered character in what might be her most challenging and interesting role to date. As the bigoted drug and alcohol abusing neighbor of a young, Syrian refugee, she is both reprehensible and pathetic. The bilingual script is tense and touching and the original soundtrack goes hard. Both times I’ve watched this film, I’ve been left speechless for a full hour after as I processed the emotional aftermath. Watch it. It’ll make your heart a better place.
Jacir: Directed by Waheed AlQawasmi. With Lorraine Bracco, Malek Rahbani, Tutweezy, Tony Mehanna. A young Syrian refugee faces hard truths chasing the American dream on the streets of Memphis, Tennessee, while living in poverty, dealing with social injustice and witnessing his neighbor's opioid addiction.

Had no idea this movie was filming here in Memphis during the Covid “lockdown” in 2020. Now there’s a lawsuit. It’s a producer who was taken off the credits, terminated, not paid and is pissed off. The movie opens tomorrow, 3-24-23 & I’d never heard of it until news of the lawsuit appeared in the Memphis newspaper.
The film will enjoy its world premiere at the upcoming 53rd Nashville Film Festival (NashFilm).
