The accident puts things in perspective for Jack. He’s always known that he was in love with you, that he wanted to marry you. He even has the ring. But the accident reminds him that life isn’t infinite, that at any given time something just reach out and snatch you away, and that’s one of the reasons he pauses because he has to find a way to come terms with that and you need to adjust to your new reality.
He tucks the ring away at the back of his nightstand where he knows you won’t find it, waiting for the right time. But the right time it doesn’t come, not until two years later when you buy a house together and you’re starting to pack up the condo.
He opens the drawer and there it is, just sitting there. That’s when Jack realises maybe there isn’t a right time, maybe all you have is the here and now.
“You wanna help daddy with something?” Jack asks Herbert as he snuffles at the drawer, investigating the previously unexplored space. He tilts his head up to look at Jack with those puppy dog eyes and Jack can’t think of a better way of proposing than including your baby.
He gently unhooks Herbert’s collar, threading the ring through it before he reattaches it. It glints like a star in the light as he carries the dog back towards the bedroom door, opening it before he kisses the dog’s head and sets him on the floor. “Go find mommy.”
Herbert wriggles out of his hands and trots off in search of his other favourite person. Jack follows, leaning in the doorway as the tiny dog marches up to you as you pack some of your books into a box. He sits down and barks once and you smile down at him as you pick him up.
“Oh baby, are you getting rowdy because mommy and daddy aren’t paying attention to you. Oh I know you’re not getting any fuss-” You trail off, your finger hooking on the ring before you look up at him. “Jack?”
“Amelie.” He says, unfastening Herbert’s collar and tipping the ring onto the palm of his hand. “I cannot imagine a world without you in it and I don’t want to spend a single moment without you knowing how much you truly mean to me.”
He gets down on one knee, holding the ring out to you.
“Amelie, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
