Have you ever come across the book The Wizard of Willoughby Wallow? It was one of my favorites as a child.
I hadn't so I went to find it online! It's adorable I kind of want a copy for myself now. The language reads aloud so nicely, the art is charming and shows emotions well, it's silly but still has a good message... what a wonderful little book! Thanks for the rec, anon. For anyone else who's curious:

Chick. by Kultur : ) Via Flickr: A little chick illustrated by Jack Kent. "John Wellington Kent, better known by his signature Jack Kent (1920–1985), was an American cartoonist and prolific author-illustrator of 40 children's books. He is perhaps best known as the creator of King Aroo, a comic strip often compared to Walt Kelly's Pogo. In addition to his own books, he also illustrated 22 books by other authors." Wikipedia
