In the original script, Christine had to wind the music box for it to light up and play music. During rehearsal, I asked Simon Phillips if it was possible for the music box to play spontaneously when Christine is alone, as I felt that it would be a stronger (and more unsettling) moment in the story, preceding the Phantom’s entrance into Christine’s hotel room. After a conversation with our amazing props team, they worked out how to make the music box play remotely...and this is the moment that you now see in the show today.

Fun fact: the music box contains a miniature version of the rollercoaster.
