PJP MIXTAPES: During the summer of 2019, vocalist Bethlehem, created magic with violinist Jack Drummond, bassist Richard Hill, and drummer Malik Henry. They created a musical experience around the theme of a long walk home. The subtext was that this particular walk happened at Ibo Landing: the historic site where it is believed that an entire shipload of Africans sold into slavery, turned toward the ocean and walked into the waters taking their own lives instead of becoming slaves in America. Summer 2019:@philajazzproject participated in @whitat200, a region-wide celebration of poet #WaltWhitman’s 200th birthday. Inspired by Whitman’s fondness for walking & the powerful songs of Civil Rights Movement protesters, PJP presented a series of four singing walks, "caroling" through the streets of Philadelphia /// These walks inspired a 10-part Whitman Sampler Mixtape Series.
