We’re happy to have local comic book artist Jackie Lewis join us on Saturday for Halloween ComicFest! She has two books with Oni Press and one slated for next year. With indie comics on the rise, Jackie launched herself at the right time.
Play Ball is her big title with Oni Press. It’s the story of Dashiell who moves to a new school. Her talent with baseball pushes her to try out for the boy’s team. She refuses to settle for softball when she knows she can square off against any guy. She’ll do anything to live her dream whether it’s standing up to her family, her school, and the state.
Upon its released, comicbookresources.com featured Play Ball on their website. In the article editor Jill Beaton described Jackie’s work saying, "Up until recently, many considered comics to be an all-boy's club, but Jackie is part of a burgeoning generation of female cartoonists that is changing all that. It only made sense that we would have a woman join us for Play Ball. She brings a special passion to the project, and her wonderful artwork really makes the action on the diamond come alive."
I highly suggest picking up a copy of Play Ball on Saturday at Halloween ComicFest from Jackie. It’s great for all ages especially if you need a great coming of age story for your little one.
It wasn’t only her professional work that made me respect and adore Jackie. I’ve known her for a few years now. Jackie came into my life when I struggled through many hardships. Something you should know is she has a stellar sense of humor. She would sit with me and make me keel over laughing until my sides hurt. She’s one of the kindest people you will ever meet. She’s grateful to the people who’ve helped her and even more humbled by fans. She respects every person from all walks of life. It comes through in her work.
Whether it’s Play Ball or fandom work for Marvel, DC, The Hobbit, Night Vale, etc., her art has a unique sense of humor. One of my recent favorite pieces is for Inktober. It’s a monster who’s a DM for Dungeons and Dragons. The irony in a monster playing D&D doesn’t need explanation. I suggest picking up one of her art books if she brings them on Saturday. She has no fear in drawing all body types and alternate life styles.
Jackie is also one of the best inkers I’ve seen. Her inking rivals any professional in the business. It’s beautiful.
Jackie will be at Halloween ComicFest from 1-4 with Oni Press artist Cara McGee. They will also be two of our costume contest judges!
