"I know we're not officially talking, but I need help with my tie."

The Fabray household was rife with commotion as all of Quinn and Charlie’s friends got ready for prom together. The bathroom that connected the twins’ rooms had a counter full of makeup, Quinn’s room was full of various hairstyling tools, and seven beautiful prom dresses were hung neatly along Charlie’s room, where someone had stashed a speaker that had been crooning popular throwbacks all night. They were all wearing matching silky robes- practice for our weddings one day, Quinn said when she ordered them- and were in the process of both getting their hair done and shipping on champagne, or dancing, if you were Brittany. Charlie’s hazel eyes roamed over the room as her mother painstakingly curled her fine hair, and it was hard not to think of the party where everything had changed. Quinn’s party had been the start of everything- the powers, the new friendships, the secrets, her car accident, Puck- and this prom, she thought, would be the end. Everyone was off in different directions, and while she’d still have Rachel, she’d be far from her sister for the first time in her life and she’d have no idea what was going on with Puck anymore, since he’d officially rejected her once and for all. Which was okay, she mused as she closed her eyes so he mother could cover her hair in hairspray, but at some point he’d been her best friend and now she didn’t even know if he was okay.

“My turn!” Rachel called as Charlie left her seat, and placed a magazine photo of the updo she wanted on the vanity. Charlie had just started to brush through her hair when the doorbell rang. “The boys! They’re early!” Tina exclaimed, and Quinn peeking through the window towards their driveway. “Nope, just one. Charlie, will you get it? I’m in the middle of Santana’s hair here.” Rachel was just about to object until Quinn shot her a look, and Charlie quickly interjected, “Okay… I’ll get it.” Picking up the bottom of her robe so she could hurry down the stairs, Charlie didn’t even take the time to check who it was before she opened the door… To reveal Noah Puckerman, crumpled tie in hand.

“I know we’re not officially talking, but I need help with my tie,” Puck said, and then there was only silence between them as Charlie tried to make out why he was here without asking him. Glee club saw to it that all of the boys in the group knew their way around a tux, so it was really just an excuse to… What? See her? Or someone else here? He had either dated or slept with every person in her house at the moment. She decided to let him tell her himself, so she stepped out of the way to let him inside and then tied his tie for him, maintaining her silence. She’d been in love with him, and he didn’t love her back, and in response she gave him space while she tried to regain her dignity. And that space hasn’t been crossed until now. “So who are you going to prom with?” He asked, and she flitted her eyes up to his as she finished his tie and then dropped her hands to her sides. “Jesse St. James. He’s this guy from Carmel Rachel’s friends with. They used to practice duets together before she started dating Finn. You?”

“Stag.” Puck responded, rubbing his hands together. “Look, I… I just wanted to say that I’m sorry for what I said to you, Charlie.” “It’s okay, I get it,” She quickly replied, but he picked up right where he left off. “And I don’t want to leave for New York without knowing I’ll see you again.” He peered at her with pleading eyes, which normally would’ve melted her to the point of humiliation, but she was too speechless to focus on it too much. “Wait, New York?”

“Yeah, Finn and I are getting an apartment while he goes to acting school, and I’m gonna try to get a start on this music gig.”

“Well then, you probably will be seeing me-” Charlie was cut off by Rachel, who’d come halfway down the stairs to shout “Charlie, hurry!”, realized she was talking to Puck, and then ran back up stairs. With a chuckle, Puck then looked to Charlie again and nodded to her to continue. “You probably will be seeing me,” She repeated, “Because I’m going to be in New York too. I’m going to Columbia.” Puck look astounded, and Charlie was happy about this new development too, but she didn’t think talking about them being in the same place after college was going to help much with her her attempt at backing-off, and she really had to hurry to get ready on time and still help Rachel, so she added, “Look, I really do have to hurry, but we can talk later, if you want, okay?” She started up the stairs when he seemed to accept her words and added, “I’m glad we got your tie figured out, though!”
