Jack Roth was a noted second generation abstract expressionist and colorfield painter who was also a polymorph. He was a professor of mathematics for parts of his career. He enrolled in the California School of Fine Arts in 1949 and studied under Rothko, Clyfford Still and Richard Diebenkorn. He got his professional break in 1954 when he was selected by the Guggenheim for the show Younger AMERICAN Painters, one of the first museum exhibitions to feature the new AMERICAN abstraction. He showed alongside Diebenkorn, Guston, de Kooning, Motherwell, Pollock and Kline. Jack Roth, Untitled, acrylic on paper, 30.5 x 22.5. Roth was a noted second-generation Abstract Expressionist/Colorfield painter. His early work was influenced by the Bay Area Abstractionists with whom he studied, including Diebencorn, Mark Rothko and Clifford Still. His work was included in the seminal Guggenheim Museum Show “Younger American Painters,” along with many of the names of the day. His work would evolve toward Colorfield in the 70s.
