When Ben is mad at Jackie.
When Jackson and Ben are individual moods but also both.
Ben & Jack’s decor.
Author’s Commentary #3: Cats.
In the second chapter of Mystify Me: Cats & Invasions, we are introduced to the fact that Jackson has two cats: Dahmer and Ruger. We are told that Dahmer and Ruger do not get along, and that Dahmer is particularly hostile in comparison to the sweet beast.
Besides the fact that Jackson is for sure a cat person and that’s the main reason those animals are there, these two also tell a little bit more about the character-- personifying two aspects of Jackson’s personality.
When Ben meets them during the chapter Steam, Ruger seems to be scared of Ben while Dahmer is protective and agressive.
These two responses are representing Jackson’s feelings towards Ben as a new situation. One one end, there’s hesitance and curiosity as represented by the way Ruger and Ben get along. It’s a quick transition with him, in fact, as we are told that Ben and him are ‘buddies’ within the same night.
However, Dahmer remains skeptical, the same way that a part of Jackson does regarding Ben.
In the chapter Two & Two we find out that Ruger used to be Caleb’s cat during his childhood: Warmth and companionship being the strongest aspect that Caleb’s recieved from Jackson during those years.
Dahmer is also present in the chapter Daisies & Question Marks, right before Ben walks into Jackson’s abandoned room-- signifying Ben’s about to find out clues regarding that aspect of Jackson’s personality.
A small gatekeeper, if you will.
PS: The name ‘Dahmer’ is after the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. As Jackson is obsessed with those type of stories.
